RIO RANCHO, NM - The Duke City Gladiators scored 38 straight points through a span of over two quarters as they put away the visiting Vegas Knight Hawks tonight, 53-30, tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center.
The win allows the Gladiators to stay in the playoff hunt, though the climb is still uphill. They are 5-8 and just a game back of the fourth-place Northern Arizona Wranglers in the Western Conference standings. The San Diego Strike Force, who fell to the Arizona Rattlers tonight, are 5-8 and in fifth due to tiebreakers
The Knight Hawks fall to 4-9 and sit in last place in the conference in their second season in the IFL. They defeated the Gladiators, 50-26, in the teams' first meeting of the season which was at Henderson, Nevada. Duke City leads the overall series 2-1.
Charles McCullum finished 12 of 18 for 121 yards with a touchdown for the Gladiators. Tim Whitfield rushed for three touchdowns and Demry Croft added another two. Tyron Laughinghouse caught five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Roderick Chapman led the Duke City defense with seven tackles, and Claude Davis recorded 1.5 sacks.
Vegas quarterback Daquan Neal went nine of 19 for 117 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 61 yards and a score. Davonte Sapp-Lynch rushed for 36 yards and a touchdown, and caught a pair of balls for 55 yards and a score. Brant Ibeh's seven tackles led the Knight Hawks, and Zachary Hannibal had an interception.
Vegas gained 213 yards to 175 for Duke City. The Knight Hawks' edge mainly came with a 63-yards on the ground. The Gladiators had a 25-yard advantage through the air.The Knight Hawks were penalized 11 times for 82 yards and the Gladiators were flagged nine times for 46 yards.
