Sugar Skulls 42, Wranglers 28

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - The Tucson Sugar Skulls outscored the Northern Arizona Wranglers 14-0 in the fourth quarter which proved to be the difference as they claimed victory over their hosts tonight at Findlay Toyota Center.
The Sugar Skulls' 42-28 win improves their record to 7-5 and keeps them in third place in the Western Conference. They're just a half game back of Bay Area Panthers. Bay Area lost tonight to the Frisco Fighters, 45-38. If they can overtake the Panthers, it would mean being at home for a playoff game in the first round.
Northern Arizona falls to 6-7 and remains in fourth place in the conference standings. The Wranglers won the first matchup between the teams, 31-21, on May 6 at Tucson. They lead the overall series 5-4 (3-2 home, 2-2 away).
Ramone Atkins of the Sugar Skulls finished nine of 17 for 122 yards and two touchdowns for the Sugar Skulls. He also rushed for 60 yards and a touchdowns. Mike Jones had 34 yards with a touchdown on the ground. Tim Lukas led Tucson with two catches for 59 yards, while Carrington Thompson, Sr. and Benjamin Jones each caught a touchdown pass. Maurice Jackson's eight tackles led the defense. Melik Owens had a sack, while Rashie Hodge and Julian Marcantel each posted an interception.
For the Wranglers, Garrett Kettle went eight of 15 for 110 yards with 110 yards and two touchdowns. Jarrod Ware, Jr. had 74 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Ryan Wisniewski caught three passes for 68 yards and a touchdowns, and Glen Gibbons, Jr. had four receptions for 46 yards and a score. Joe Powell and Justin Whisenhunt led the defense with eight and seven tackles, respectively.
Northern Arizona had a 239 to 220 advantage in total yards, with all of that coming in the passing game. Tucson had a mere six second-edge in time of possession. The Wranglers were penalized six times for 64 yards and the Sugar Skulls were flagged four times for 25 yards.
The Sugar Skulls will host the Vegas Knight Hawks on July 1 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. The Wranglers are on a bye in week 15, but return to action on July 8 when they host the Massachusetts Pirates with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
