PHOENIX, AZ - Drew Powell threw for 224 yards and six touchdowns as the Arizona Rattlers pushed back the San Diego Strike Force tonight, 47-48, at the Footprint Center.
Arizona's win, combined with the Bay Area Panthers' 45-38 loss to the Frisco Fighters earlier tonight, gained the it sole possession of first place in the Western Conference with three weeks to go in the IFL season. The Rattlers, winners of six straight, are 9-4 on the season. They lead the overall series over the Strike Force 7-0, including a 4-0 mark at home.
The Strike Force sit in the fifth spot and are just a game back of the Northern Arizona Wranglers, who lost tonight to the Tucson Sugar Skulls by a 42-28 margin. San Diego is 5-8 on their season. This was the only meeting between the teams this season.
Powell went 17 of 23 for those 224 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 44 yards and a score. Isiah Scott finished with seven receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns, while Jamal Miles had six catches for 56 yards and four touchdowns. Jarmaine Doubs had eight tackles to lead the Rattlers defense, and Davontae Merriweather and Dillon Winfrey each added an interception.
Nate Davis of the Strike Force finished 18 of 38 for 186 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of picks. He also had a rushing touchdown. Kentrez Bell caught six passes for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Marques Rodgers had six catches for 43 yards and a score. Carlos Thompson, Jr. added four grabs for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Ezekiel Noah led the defense with seven tackles.
Arizona accumulated 284 yards of total offense to 229 for San Diego. The Rattlers had a 38-yard advantage in rushing yards and a 17-yard edge in passing yards. The Strike Force were penalized 12 times for 84 yards and the Rattlers were flagged 11 times for 73 yards.
The Rattlers will host the Massachusetts Pirates on July 2 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. The Strike Force are on a bye next week, but return to action as they visit the Bay Area Panthers on July 10 for a 7:05 p.m. kickoff.
