Sugar Skulls 59, Gladiators 51

RIO RANCHO, NM - Three different players rushed for two touchdowns apiece as the Tucson Sugar Skulls claimed a playoff berth a 59-51 win over the Duke City Gladiators tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center.
The Sugar Skulls, 8-6, sit in the third spot in the standings. They will either be the third seed or the fourth should they lose to the Green Bay Blizzard next week and the Northern Arizona Wranglers win next week at the Arizona Wranglers.
With the loss, the Gladiators, 5-9, are eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in their three-season IFL tenure. Duke City won the first contest between the teams, 56-49 at home on May 13, and dropped the second, 47-43 at Tucson. The Sugar Skulls now lead the overall series 6-2, including a 2-2 mark in New Mexico.
Ramone Atkins went 11 of 15 for 138 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for the Tucson offense. He also rushed for 27 yards and a pair of scores. Mike Jones led all rushers with 16 carries for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Benjamin Jones added 26 yards and two scores on the ground. Carrington Thompson, Sr. caught six passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Trae'varis Ferrell led the defense with six tackles and a half sack. Maurice Jackson had a sack and Rashie Hodge added an interception.
Charles McCullum completed 16 of 21 throws for 176 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.
Demry Croft rushed for three touchdowns. Troy Evans caught seven passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, and Xavier Amey had six grabs for 69 yards and a score. Gregory Dent, Jr. led the defense with 8.5 tackles and recently signed Claude Davis added a sack.
Tucson had 258 yards of total offense to 184 for Duke City. The Sugar Skulls had an edge of 108 yards in rushing and the Gladiators had a 34-yard advantage in passing yardage. The Gladiators were penalized four times for 44 yards and the Sugar Skulls were flagged three times for 13 yards.
Both teams are at home to close out the regular season. The Gladiators will host the Bay Area Panthers on July 15 at 5:05 p.m. The Sugar Skulls will host the Green Bay Blizzard on July 15 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for our complete 2023 IFL Schedule.
