Steamwheelers 47, Blizzard 39

MOLINE, IL - The Quad City Steamwheelers scored on a pair of special teams play and once on defense -- all in the first half -- as they Clinched a playoff berth with a 47-39 win over the visiting Green Bay Blizzard at Vibrant Center at the Mark.
The Steamwheelers, who improved to 9-5, sit in third place. They could end up in second if the Massachusetts Pirates fall to the Northern Arizona Wranglers tonight (game ongoing at the time of this report) and at the Sioux Falls Storm next week, and the Steamwheelers defeat the Tulsa Oilers next week. They also could end up in fourth with a loss to the Oilers and a Storm win over the Pirates next week. Other than those scenarios, they will be in third of the four Eastern Conference teams to reach the postseason.
The Blizzard, who fell to 7-7, are eliminated to the playoffs following this loss and the Storm's 54-47 win at the Iowa Barnstormers tonight.
Quad City wins the season series, 2-1 with all three games won by the home team. The overall series between the teams stands at 4-4 with the Steamwheelers 3-2 at home and 1-2 at Green Bay.
Quad City got out of the gate fast when C.J. Windham, Jr. took the opening kickoff 49 yards around the left sideline for the score. They weren't done as the Blizzard's Mike Green II had difficulty fielding the kick in his own end zone. The ball was recovered by the Steamwheelers Marquis Hendrix for another Quad City score. The home team was up 14-0 just 1:18 into the contest. Green Bay got on the board as Terrence Smith took the handoff on the left side, then cut forward and crossed the goal line. The Blizzard's defense held strong, forcing a 34-yard field goal try from Quad City's Chase Allbaugh. The kick was blocked by Dishawn Raye and returned to the 13-yard line by Ravarius Rivers. Jared Wood's 50-yard field goal try went wide right, giving the Steamwheelers the ball back with 1:30 left in the opening quarter. Quad City led 14-6 heading into the second quarter.
Allbaugh's 29-yard field goal gave the Steamwheelers their first offensive points of the contest as they extended their lead to 11 points early in the second. The Blizzard cut into the lead on quarterback Max Meylor's one-yard keeper up the middle to make the score 17-13 with 5:25 remaining in the first half. With the Steamwheelers driving, Hilliard was intercepted in the end zone by Shawn Steele II of the Blizzard. On the very next play, Meylor was intercepted over the middle by Vincent Shaw, who returned the ball 23 yards for another Steamwheelers score. E.J. Hilliard's pass to Shane Simpson for the two-point conversion extended the lead to 12 points with 49 seconds left in the half. On the next offensive play, Meylor was intercepted again, this time by Kendricks Gladney, Jr. to give Quad City back the ball at the Green Bay 22. Hilliard found Mike Carrigan in the shallow left side of the end zone to extend the Steamwheelers' lead. Quad City took a 32-13 lead into the break.
Green Bay had a fourt-and-11 from their own 12, and JaRome Johnson, in for Meylor at quarterback, tossed short to Smith who rambled to the end zone for a 38-yard score. Hilliard took off from the one-yard line, but lost the ball and was recovered by Deldrick Canty of the Blizzard. Smith made it a one-score game with a three-yard rush around the left tackle and into the end zone. Quad City had the ball and a 32-26 lead heading into the final quarter.
Shane Simpson's four-yard touchdown run around the left tackle, coupled with Hilliard's rush up the middle for the two-point conversion, put Quad City up by two touchdowns with 11:20 left. The Steamwheelers' Darreon Jackson stripped the ball from Smith to put Quad City back in business in Green Bay territory. Simpson rushed up the middle for a seven-yard touchdown to put the Steamwheelers up 47-26. Green Bay responded on Johnson's 28-yard scramble and the game was back to a two-possession game. After stopping the Steamwheelers offense, the Blizzard scored one last time, on a four-yard pass from Johnson to Irvin.
Hilliard finished 12 of 22 for 112 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He rushed for 58 yards. Simpson added 34 yards off seven carries to his two rushing touchdowns. Simpson and Keyvan Rudd each caught four passes, for 43 and 34 yards, respectively. Jacksonfinished with six tackles, and Hendrix added give. Gladney and Shaw each had an interception, and Jaylin Swan tallied two sacks.
Johnson went eight of 16 for 125 yards and two touchdowns with no picks. He also rushed for 41 yards and a score. Smith rushed for two touchdowns and caught another and had two receptions for 42 yards. Curenton caught four balls for 68 yards. Rivers led the defense with seven tackles and Allaah Sessions added six.
Green Bay tallied 226 yards to 218 for Quad City. The Blizzard held an advantage of 24 passing yards and the Steamwheelers held an edge of 16 yards on the ground. The Steamwheelers were penalized 11 times for 108 yards and the Blizzard were flagged seven times for 32 yards. Quad City nearly doubled the time of possession, 39:37 to 20:23.
The Steamwheelers close out the regular season with a trip to the Tulsa Oilers on July 15 at 5:05 p.m. The Blizzard will visit the Tucson Sugar Skulls for an interconference matchup on July 15 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
