TULSA, OK - The Tulsa Oilers saved the best for last on their home slate as they put together a solid 56-35 win over the visiting Quad City Steamwheelers tonight at the BOK Center.
Tulsa's win was their first-ever at home and comes in their regular season finale. They finish their regular season at 2-13 over, though their improved play over the second half of the season is not indicative of their play. Their first win came on April 22, a 54-48 decision at the Iowa Barnstormers. The 56 points was the most the Oilers have scored in a game, eclipsing the 55 points previously scored twice.
Quad City falls to 9-6 on the season and will be on the road to start the playoffs the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. They will visit the top-seeded Frisco Fighters in the first round of the playoffs, July 22 at 5:05 p.m (pacific time). The Steamwheelers defeated the Oilers 62-42 at Tulsa on April 15. The teams overall are tied 1-1.
Quad City started off immediately when Jarron McGaw returned the opening kickoff 52 yards for the opening touchdown. Tulsa returned the favor with a 51-yard touchdown return from Joshua Crockett. With the Steamwheelers driving, quarterback E.J. Hilliard was picked off by oilers' linebacker Jordan Jones. They took advantage of the turnover with a 26-yard pass from Andre Sale to Jonathan Nance. Chase Allbaugh cut into the deficit for the Steamwheelers with a 19-yard field goal try with just over a minute to play in the opening quarter. The Oilers led 13-10 at the end of one.
Tulsa took a nine-point lead on Andre Sale's 18-yard touchdown toss to Crockett in the right side of the end zone. Quad City responded with a five-yard run around the right side from Shane Simpson. The play was set up by Hilliard's 36-yard bomb to Simpson on the previous play. The Oilers turned the ball over on downs while driving down deep into Quad City territory. The Steamwheelers took their second lead of the day when Hilliard found Simpson wide open in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown. Crockett returned the ensuing kickoff down to the Quad City eight-yard line to give the Oilers excellent field position. Sale hit Crockett in the back of the end zone for a go-ahead score. Taylor Hawkins intercepted Hilliard to give the ball back to the Oilers. Sale was picked off by Darreon Jackson, who returned it 26 yards to the house to put Quad City in front. Sale plunged over the end zone from a yard out to put Tulsa back in the league. The Oilers led 33-29 at the break.
Dalton James' six-yard touchdown run up the middle extended the Oilers' lead four minutes into the third quarter. Hilliard rushed for a four-yard score around the left side midway through the quarter, but was unable to complete the two-point conversion, leaving Tulsa in a 40-35 lead. Sale bootlegged around the right side for a two-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 12 points with 3:16 remaining. The Oilers led 47-33 heading into the final quarter.
After Tulsa's defense forced a turnover on downs, Victor Leventritt was short on a 28-yard field goal try that could have made it a 15-point game. The Oilers defense forced the Steamwheelers into a fourth-and-23, and Josh Holloway was unable to handle the long pass from Hilliard to give Tulsa back the ball. They responded with a 13-yard touchdown from Sale across the middle to Nance. Hilliard was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, providing the Oilers with a franchise-high 56 points.
Sale completed 17 of 27 passes for 145 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for a pair of scores. James rushed for 32 yards and a touchdowns, and caught seven passes for 45 yards. Nance caught four balls for 48 yards and two touchdowns. Crockett hauled in a pair of touchdown passes to go along with his kickoff return for touchdown. Jones, the leading tackler in the IFL this season, led the defense with nine tackles to go along with an interception and a sack.
Hilliard went 10 of 23 for 135 yards with a touchdown and two picks, while rushing for 28 yards and a score. Simpson had a terrific outing, rushing for 27 yards and a touchdown, while catching seven balls for 100 yards and another score. Mike Carrigan added three receptions for 35 yards. Jaylin Swan led the Steamwheelers with 7.5 tackles, and Jackson added an interception.
The Steamwheelers gained 193 yards to 184 for the Oilers. They had a 19-yard advantage in rushing yards, while Tulsa had a 10-yard edge in receiving yards. Quad City was penalized eight times for 52 yards, while Tulsa was flagged three yards for 35 yards.
