DES MOINES, IA - The Frisco Fighters held off the Iowa Barnstormers in the second half as they concluded the regular season with a 51-35 win tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
Frisco, which had already clinched the league's best record and home field advantage throughout the playoffs, finished with a 13-2 mark and finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak. They will host the Quad City Steamwheelers on Saturday, July 22 at 5:05 p.m. (pacific time) in the first round (a.k.a. quarterfinals) of the playoffs. The Fighters have now made the playoffs in all three of their seasons since joining the IFL. The Fighters lead the overall series against the Barnstormers, 4-0, with identical 2-0 records at home and on the road.
The Barnstormers, who have struggled this season, finish with a 3-12 mark which puts them in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. This was the only meeting between the Barnstormers and Fighters this season.
TJ Edwards, a strong candidate for Most Valuable Player in the league this season, finished 16 of 23 for 204 yards and four touchdowns for the Fighters. Phazione McClurge caught six passes for 93 yards and three touchdowns. Jerminic Smith added five catches for 41 yards, while Jordan Jolly had four grabs for 40 yards and a score. Kordell Jackson led Frisco's defense with eight tackles. B.J. Taufalele had a sack and Shaq Bond added an interception.
Iowa's Daniel Smith completed 17 of 37 passes for 155 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Antonio Wimbush rushed for 33 yards and a touchdown, and had five receptions for 39 yards and two more scores. Dom McNiel caught six balls for 64 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Russell paced the barnstormers defense with 6.5 tackles and Dave Calderon added five tackles -- all solo.
Frisco tallied 226 yards of total offense to 194 for Iowa. The Fighters had a 49-yard advantage in receiving yards and the Barnstormers had a 26-yard edge in rushing yards. The Fighters were penalized five times for 28 yards, while the Barnstormers were flagged twice for 11 yards.
