Sugar Skulls 48, Blizzard 39
7/15/23 --
TUCSON, AZ - The Tucson Sugar Skulls ensured themselves the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs as they closed out the regular season with a 48-39 win over the visiting Green Bay Blizzard tonight at the Tucson Convention Center.
Tucson needed either a win or a Northern Arizona Wranglers loss at the Arizona Rattlers tonight to avoid dropping to the fourth spot. The Sugar Skulls got both and will visit the Bay Area Panthers in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday, July 23 at 2:05 p.m. (pacific time). The Sugar Skulls end the season with a mark of 9-5, including a mark of 8-6 in conference play.
Green Bay, which was eliminated from the Eastern Conference playoffs last week, finishes their 2023 campaign at 7-8 in the year and in fifth place in that conference.
This was the only meeting between the teams this season and the only non-conference game of the season for Tucson. The series is now tied 1-1 with each team standing at 1-0 at home.
Ramone Atkins completed seven of 10 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown for the Sugar Skulls. He also rushed for a touchdown. Mike Jones carried 12 times for 47 yards and three touchdowns, while Benjamin Jones added eight rushes for 47 yards and two scores. Dequan Dudley caught a pair of passes for 22 yards. Trae'varis Farrell had 6.5 tackles to lead the Tucson defense, and Rashie Hodge caught his eighth interception of the season.
