PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers survived a second-half Northern Arizona Wranglers rally and clinched the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs with a 55-39 win tonight at Footprint Center.
Arizona enters the playoffs with a regular season record of 11-4 and will host the same Wranglers team in the first round of the playoffs, on July 22 at 6:05 p.m. (pacific time). The Rattlers are riding an eight-game winning streak. They swept the three-game series over the Wranglers this season. They won 60-34 at Phoenix on May 20 and won in double-overtime, 63-62, at Prescott Valley on June 3. The Rattlers now lead the overall series 6-2 with a 4-1 advantage at home, including the playoffs. The win marked the 250th all-time victory for Rattlers head coach Kevin Guy in indoor/arena football.
Northern Arizona finishes the regular season at 7-8 and enters the the postseason as the fourth seed. They won the IFL National Championship last season. In the other Western Conference matchup, the Tucson Sugar Skulls will face the Bay Area Panthers.
The Wranglers scored on a seven-yard touchdown toss from Nick Watson to Glen Gibbons, Jr. A dropkick by Conor Mangan gave them an early 8-0 lead. The Rattlers got on the board courtesy a 17-yard touchdown from Drew Powell to Isiah Scott. They took the lead when Jager Gardner rushed in from four yards out. Arizona led 14-8 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Rattlers went up by two scores on a two-yard run early in the second. They increased their lead later in the quarter on Drew Powell's seven-yard run. Ulric Jones forced a fumble by the Wranglers' Watson and the ball was picked up and returned by Chris Terrell 31 yards to push Arizona's lead to four possessions. Northern Arizona tacked on a 40-yard field goal as time expired. The Rattlers led 34-11 at intermission.
Northern Arizona cut into the lead with a 23-yard touchdown toss from Watson to Ryan Wisniewski. Mangan's dropkick made the score 35-19 just over a minute into the game. After the Wranglers recovered the onside kick, Watson found Sheldon Augustine for a 17-yard touchdown. The Rattlers increased their lead to 38-26 on midway through the third quarter on a 42-yard field goal from Shane McInerny. Watson's 30-yard touchdown to Jarrod Ware, Jr., along with another Mangan drop kick, pulled the Wranglers to within five points in with 5:16 remaining in the quarter. Powell found Isaiah Huston for a 12-yard touchdown and Arizona was up 45-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Rattlers scored again on a 45-yard touchdown throw from Drew Powell to Jamal Miles to make it a three-possession game. Watson's 20-yard touchdown to Wisniewski drew Northern Arizona closer at the midpoint of the fourth. The Rattlers iced the contest with a McInerny field goal from 18 yards out.
Powell finished 11 of 15 for 189 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, and rushed for 37 yards and another score. Huston added five catches of 85 yards to his scoring grab and miles hauled in three passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Christopher Page led the defense with six tackles, all solo. Connor Taylor added 5.5 tackles to the effort.
Watson completed 14 of 33 throws for 174 yards, five touchdowns and no picks. Wisniewski caught six passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Ware rushed for 37 yards, and caught a pair of throws for 37 yards and a score. Justic'e King tallied six tackles and Armonti Carey had a sack for the Wranglers defense.
Arizona gained 231 yards of total offense compared to 221 yards for Northern Arizona. The Rattlers had a 23-yard edge in rushing yards and the Wranglers held a 13-yard edge in the passing game. Arizona was flagged 16 times for 98 yards, while the Wranglers were penalized six times for 56 yards. Northern Arizona held a 15-minute edge in time of possession.
