Overview

The following is the 2023-24 schedule for the Rip City Remix.

This will be the inaugural season for the Remix which was announced as the NBA G League's newest team on April 26 of this year (the name, identity and colors were released on June 26). The team, which begins play the second week of November, will be coached by former Trail Blazers assistant coach Jim Moran. The Blazers own and operate the Remix as its NBA affiliate.

The G League is comprised of 31 teams; 29 of which serve as developmental teams for NBA clubs. Each NBA team has a G League team which is affiliated with it with the exception of the Phoenix Suns. The other two teams are the G League Ignite based in Henderson Nevada and Mexico City Capitanes based out of Mexico's capital city. The league is designed as a farm system similar to professional baseball and each team is allowed to protect up to six players. The league was founded in 2001 as the NBA Developmental League (or "D-League"). When the league gained Gatorade as a sponsor, it was renamed the NBA G League prior to the 2017-18 season. Per a statement from the Trail Blazers, over half of current players on NBA rosters have seen action in the G League.

Portland has five players currently listed on its roster, including a pair of players on two-way contracts. Those are center Ibou Dadji and forward John Butler, Jr.. Also on the roster is guard Michael Devoe, guard/forward Quinton Rose and forward Romeo Weems. The roster will be filled out over the next month and a half as the season draws nearer.

The Trail Blazers previously had an affiliation with the Idaho Stampede, but severed those ties in a cost-cutting move after the 2013-14 season. The Stampede have since moved to the Sale Lake City area as the Salt Lake City Stars and are still a part of the current G League.

The season is broken down into two separate-length sections; the Showcase Cup and the regular season. Originally, the showcase cup consisted of each team playing one another when the league was at around 15 teams. 

The Showcase Cup begins on Friday, November 10 and culminates with a single-elimination tournament to crown a champion at the 2023 NBA G League Winter Showcase. Teams are placed into four regions and play 14 games exclusively against one another in NBA G League markets. The teams with the best winning percentage in each region, along with the next four teams with the best winning percentages regardless of region, will advance to compete for the Showcase Cup Championship during Winter Showcase on December 19.

The Remix will begin their season on November 10 and 11 with a trip to the South Bay Lakers. After a November 13 date at the Ontario Clippers, they entertain the Lakers on the 17th in their home opener. The regular season portion of the schedule begins with a trip to the Stockton Kings on December 28 before they host the defending champion Delaware Blue Coats on the 30th and 31st. The Remix close our their regular season schedule at home with a pair of games against the Santa Cruz Warriors on March 29 and 30.

The Remix will play their home games at Chiles Center on the campus of the University of Portland, located in the northern portion of the city.

MONTHLY UPDATE: The debut of the Remix has resulted in a roughly average month for the expansion G League squad. They started out with a bang with a sweep of the South Bay Lakers (affiliated to the Los Angeles Lakers) in the second week of November. The Remix picked up their first home win of 2023-24 as they dispatched the Ontario Clippers (affiliated to the Los Angeles Clippers) on November 20, and turned around and defeated the Salt Lake City Stars (affiliated to the Utah Jazz) four days later. They ended the month with a home loss to the Stars on the 26th.

Rip City stands at 4-4 on the season (2-2 home, 2-2 away) in the Showcase Cup; the first portion of the season in the league. They are in a tie with the Stars for fourth place in the seven-team West Division. The regular season begins in late December and will feature games against the rest of the league -- outside of the division. Regular season play begins on December 28 with a trip to the Stockton Kings. Next up is more of the Showcase Cup with the Remix visiting the Santa Cruz Warriors (affiliated to the Golden State Warriors) for a back-to-back December 1-2.

Through eight games, the Remix are scoring 103.1 points per game. They are shooting 41.4 percent from the field, 31.5 from beyond the three-point line and 69.8 from the free throw line. They average 45.6 rebounds, 20.6 assists and 6.4 blocks per game. In notable player news, after a 37-point, 10-rebound outing in the season opener, center Duop Reath was called up by the Trail Blazers where he has served as backup to Deandre Ayton ever since.

SHOWCASE CUP UPDATE: The Remix followed up their 4-4 November with a 4-4 December to give themselves an 8-8 mark through the end of the Showcase Cup on December 21. They open up the regular season on December 28 with a trip to Stockton to face the Kings in regional G League action. 

The brief December action included a two-game home sweep of the Kings in the middle of the docket; by four and three points, respectively. Those were the only home games on the schedule, so it improved the Remix's Showcase Cup home record to 4-2 at home. However, they claimed just two of their four six games during the month and saw their road record drop to 4-6. They finished with a split in a two-game eastern Split to the Birmingham Squadron (affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans) to conclude the Showcase Cup. Through the 16 games, they averaged 103.7 points per game and allowed 106.4 points per game.

As mentioned, the Remix begin their regular season with three December games prior to ringing in the New Year on the road against Stockton. They then enjoy a two-game home stand on December 30 and 31 with both contests coming against the Delaware Blue Coats (affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers). Both games are matinees, so check the times below to follow, or to visit the Chiles Center for some late holiday basketball action.

MONTHLY UPDATE: Despite the small sample size of three games, the Remix seem to have continued their on-off pattern of game results. That's not too surprising given a roster that is naturally in flux and the fact that, after all, Rip City is an expansion team. At the same time, specific players seem to be making progress in their respective goals to move up to the Trail Blazers roster.

After opening the regular season on December 28 with a five-point loss at the Stockton Kings, the team split a home back-to-back with the Delaware Blue Coats (great Revolutionary War reference) to end 2023 play. They enter 2024 with a 1-2 mark; 1-1 at home and 0-1 on the road.

Despite the aforementioned small sampling size, Blazers first-round draft pick Kris Murray leads the team during the regular season with 19.3 points per game and is second on the team with 8.7 rebounds per outing. Alex Reese has appeared in a pair of games, averaging 15.5 points and 3.0 blocks, and Terence Davis averages 15.0 points. George Conditt IV, who seems to have settled into the starting center spot for the time being, pulls down 9.3 rebounds per game.

The Remix embark on a three-game road trip to start the new year. The first stop is a visit to the Salt Lake City Stars on January 4, and then they head across the border for a back-to-back at the Mexico City Capitanes on the 6th and 7th. They're back home for four games before finishing the month with three on the road.

MONTHLY UPDATE: The Remix had an explosive start to the year, finishing 8-2 of the course of January. Portland was undefeated at home during the month (4-0) and went 4-2 on the road. The month also included a six-game winning streak from January 7 through January 26. The last of those was a hard-fought 108-104 win on the road over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (affiliate of Houston Rockets). The Vipers held the league's top record heading into the game. The home wins consisted of a pair of sweeps over the Oklahoma City Blue (Oklahoma City Thunder) and NBA G League Ignite (unaffiliated).

It's a strong month for the team in a league with a roster roster that is naturally in flux and the fact that, after all, Rip City is an expansion team. At the same time, specific players seem to be making progress in their respective goals to move up to the Trail Blazers roster. The Remix now stand at 9-4 overall with marks of 5-1 at home and 4-3 on the road. This puts them in a three-team tie in third place with the Stockton Kings (Sacramento Kings) and the South Bay Lakers (Los Angeles Lakers). They are just two games out of first place to the Vipers and one game behind the second place Sioux Falls Skyforce (Miami Heat).

Trail Blazers first-round draft pick Kris Murray leads the team in regular season scoring 19.3 points per game to go with 8.7 rebounds. Note that he was with the Blazers during January so those numbers are based on a small sampling size of just the three games he played in late December. Antoine Davis is scoring 18.5 points per clip and Ashton Hagans averages 15.2 points and a team-high 8.8 assists. Center George Conditt IV finished the month with averages of 16.3 points,10.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per contest.

February features eight games; four at home and four on the road. The month starts on February 2 with a home date against the South Bay Lakers (Los Angeles Lakers) before hosting the Motor City Cruise (Detroit Pistons). The team has two road back-to-backs during the month; February 9 and 10 at the Sioux Falls Skyforce, and February 22 and 24 at the Wisconsin Herd (Milwaukee Bucks). Seven of the Remix's eight games in February come against Eastern Conference teams and they close out the month at home against Raptors 905 (Toronto Raptors).

MONTHLY UPDATE: The Remix had some mixed reviews in February, a month which included an eight-day break for the squad as the NBA held its All-Star Weekend. They finished the month 3-5 overall, 0-3 at home and 3-2 on the road. They fell in a February 9-10 double header at the Sioux Falls Skyforce (affiliate of Miami Heat), but later in the month they were able to grab a pair of wins at the Wisconsin Herd (Milwaukee Bucks). They closed out the season with a 10-point loss at home to Raptors 905 (Toronto Raptors).

The Remix are 12-9 overall and in a tie with the Lakers for fourth in the Western Conference of the G League. South Bay holds the tiebreaker, however. The Skyforce lead the conference at 17-7, while the Rio Grand Valley Vipers (Houston Rockets) are in second at 13-7. The Kings end March in third place in the conference. The Remix are just percentage points in front of the sixth-place Texas Legends (Dallas Mavericks), who are 13-0 with several other teams chomping at their heels. The Eastern Conference is led by the Delaware Blue Coats (Philadelphia 76ers) at 16-6, followed by the Osceola Magic (Orlando Magic) at 13-7. The top six teams from each conference will reach the postseason.

Of note, Ashton Hagans, who was averaging 15.3 points and 9.1 assists for the Remix, moved up and was signed by the Blazers in early February.

Portland has a favorable home schedule to start March as it welcomes the Iowa Wolves (Minnesota Timberwolves), Memphis Hustle (Memphis Grizzlies), the Legends and South Bay Lakers (Los Angeles Lakers) through the 15th of the month. That home stand begins on March 1 against the Wolves. They then go on an eight-day road trip with visits to Stockton Kings (Sacramento Kings), and double headers to the Ontario Clippers (Los Angeles Clippers) and Austin Spurs (San Antonio Spurs) The Remix close out the regular season with a back-to-back on March 29-30 at home against the Santa Cruz Warriors (Golden State Warriors).
