The Arizona Rattlers outscored the Cleveland Gladiators 44-13 in the first half -- including 30-7 in the second quarter -- and kept the pressure on in the second half to capture their third ArenaBowl title in three years.
Arizona is only the second team in the history of the AFL to three-peat as champions. They dominated the entire game, finishing with a 72-32 ArenaBowl XXVII victory over the Gladiators in front of 18,410 in Cleveland. The attendance is the third highest in AFL ArenaBowl history.
The turning point came early in the second quarter as Cleveland QB Shane Austin was sacked in the end zone by Arizona's Cliff Dukes for a safety. Arizona already led 21-6 prior to the play. The Rattlers scored on the ensuing drive on a 12-yard pass from Nick Davila to Tyson Poots to extend their lead to 30-6 with 10:51 left in the second.
Davila completed 19 of his 24 passes for 237 yards with 8 touchdowns and an interception. He was named MVP of the game; his second such award in the past three ArenaBowls. Rod Windsor led the Rattlers in receiving with 123 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kerry Reed caught two touchdown passes, as well as claiming 2 interceptions on defense. Poots had 2 touchdown catches as well. Jeremy Kellem intercepted 2 of Austin's passes, running one of them back for a touchdown in the first quarter. He also had 6 tackles. Arkieth Brown led the Rattlers with 8 tackles.
Austin struggled all night behind poor blocking from his offensive line. He finished 18 of 41 for 201 years, 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Thyron Lewis led all receivers with 8 receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown. Dominic Goodman caught 7 passes for 60 yards and three touchdowns. Dominic Jones and Alvin Ray Jackson led the Gladiators with 5 tackles apiece. Jackson also registered an interception.
