Blizzard 35, Barnstormers 24

GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard scored the final 21 points as they held off the Iowa Barnstormers tonight, 35-24, at the Resch Center.
Iowa took a 24-14 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter before Jaylin Cagle returned the ensuing kickoff 42 yards for a touchdown to start the Blizzard's run. Green Bay is now 1-1 on the season with both results coming at home.
The Barnstormers fall to 0-1 on the young season. They lead the overall series between the teams, 14-9, including a 4-7 mark at Green Bay. The teams meet twice more this season; on April 26 at Green Bay and on May 24 at Des Moines, Iowa.
The Barnstormers took the opening kick and drove down to the Blizzard eight-yard line where Darius James Peterson scrambled for an eight-yard touchdown. The Blizzard countered with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Max Meylor to Lowell Patron to knot the score at 7-7 with just under five minutes left in the opening quarter. Green Bay forced a long Iowa field goal which fell short, giving the home team back the ball.
Peterson rushed for a 19-yard touchdown -- his second of the game and Iowa was back on top. Meylor returned the favor with an 18-yard naked bootleg around the left side. Gabriel Rui's 25-yard field goal with six seconds remaining gave the Barnstormers 17-14 halftime lead.
Peterson rushed in from a yard out early in the third quarter to put the Barnstormers up by 10, but the Blizzard came right back when Cagle returned the ensuing kickoff back 42 yards for another Green Bay touchdown. Rui missed a long field goal try and they Blizzard got the ball back. Iowa led 24-21 at the end of the third.
Green Bay took a 28-24 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter when Bennifield found Henry Ballard III for a 12-yard touchdown. After Rafiq Abdul-Wahid recovered a Barnstormers' fumble recovery deep in Iowa territory, the Blizzard were unable to capitalize when Mason Laramie missed a 33-yard field goal try wide to the left. Green Bay increased its lead on a one-yard run around the left side from Cagle.
Meylor finished seven of 17 for 85 yards which a pair of touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 40 yards and a score. Patron caught three balls for 46 yards and now has a touchdown reception in both games this season. Rivarius Rivers and Adrian Otero each recorded eight tackles.
Peterson, making his first appearance in nearly a year due to injury, completed 10 of 24 passes for 86 yards. He rushed for 73 yards and three touchdowns. Rob Washington had 13 carries for 61 yards, and Quian Williams caught two passes for 31 yards.
Iowa outgained Green Bay in total yards, 214 to 157. The disparity came in the ground game, 134 yards to 74. Each team was penalized seven times; the Blizzard for 63 yards and the Barnstormers for 42.
Both teams have byes next week. The Blizzard will visit the Quad City Steamwheelers on April 6 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Barnstormers will visit the Tulsa Oilers on April 6 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
