Panthers 48, Sharks 24
4/6/24 --
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Shane Simpson scored four touchdowns -- two rushing and two receiving - as the Bay Area Panthers prowled into Jacksonville and remained unbitten by the Sharks tonight at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
Bay Area's 48-24 win lays claim to victory in the Battle of the 2023 Champions in the teams' first ever meeting. The Panthers are the defending IFL champions, while the Sharks won the National Arena League championship last season before moving over the IFL this season.
The Panthers move to 2-0 on the season and into a three-way tie atop the Western Conference with the San Diego Strike Force and Vegas Knight Hawks. The Sharks have struggled early in their first IFL season. They fall to 0-3 and now sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. This is the only meeting between the teams this season.
The Sharks took the opening kickoff, driving 44 yards and capped by a four-yard touchdown pass from Conor Blount to Jeremiah Payton in the middle of the end zone. The Sharks led 6-0 with the Panthers driving deep into Sharks territory as time expired in the first quarter.
Bay Area opened the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run from Shane Simpson. Jacksonville came right back when Blount hit Payton again, this time for an 11-yard score. On the Panthers' next drive, quarterback Daquan Neal had the ball stripped by Sharks' linebacker Brandon Munoz and recovered by Jordan Cole. The Sharks were back in business, but it was short-lived as the Panthers' defense forced a turnover on downs. Neal found Simpson for a 21-yard catch-and-run touchdown with 3:20 remaining in the opening half. Bay Area's Craig Peterson kicked onside which was recovered by teammate Antwon Kincade. Neal found Simpson on a 27-yard bomb down the right sideline to go up 21-12 at the one-minutes headline. With the Sharks driving in the closing minute, Kincade intercepted Eddie Brill, Jr. Craig Peterson's 33-yard field goal try sailed wide right and the score remained 21-12 heading into halftime.
Bay Area scored less than two minutes into the third quarter on a three-yard run from Simpson. After a Jacksonville turnover on downs, the Panthers scored on an eight-yard touchdown across the middle from Neal to Jazeric Peterson. Brill and the Sharks came back on a 17-yard touchdown in the right corner of the end zone to Tamorrion Terry. The Panthers led 35-18 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Panthers increased their lead to 41-18 on Neal's eight-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Williams in the middle of the end zone. Felix Harper came in for Neal for rest purposes and promptly threw a 10-yard touchdown to a wide open JT Stokes in the right side of the end zone. The Sharks cut into the deficit when Brill scrambled to his left and threw back to a diving Kamrin Solomon for a three-yard touchdown. The Sharks attempted an onside kick which was recovered by the Panthers' Kincade.
In addition to Simpson's four touchdowns, Neal tossed four touchdowns to three different receivers. Kincade recovered two onside kick attempts, a fumble and had an interception for the Panthers' defense. For the Sharks, Brill entered the game for Blount due to an apparent injury and finished the game with two touchdown passes. Blount also threw a pair of touchdown tosses prior to leaving the game.
Note: Official statistics were not available at the time of this writing.
The Panthers will visit the Tucson Sugar Skulls on April 14 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. The Sharks have a bye next week and will look to get some revenge on the Vegas Knight Hawks when they host an April 20 meeting between the teams with a 4:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
