Blizzard 32, Steamwheelers 24
4/6/24 --
MOBILE, IL - The Green Bay Blizzard defense is something to be reckoned with.
For the second-straight game, the defense lead the way as the Blizzard held back the Quad City Steamwheelers tonight at Vibrant Arena at the mark, 32-24. The Blizzard move to 2-1 on the young IFL season, while the Steamwheelers fall to 1-1.
The win gives Green Bay an edge in the overall history between the teams, 5-4. That includes marks of 3-1 at home and 2-3 on the road. This was the first of three matchups between the teams this season. They play at Green Bay on May 31 and are back at Moline on June 22.
Green Bay scored on a three-yard run from Skylar Perry late in the first quarter. The Blizzard led 7-0 at the end of the quarter.
Quad City answered; albeit a field goal of 36 yards from Kyle Kaplan, but the Blizzard came right back on Jaylin Cagle's three-yard run and Green Bay held a 14-3 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Cagle scored again; this time on a run of nine yards to extend the lead, but the Steamwheelers came right back on Judd Erickson's 14-yard touchdown toss to Keyvan Rudd. Green Bay held a 20-10 lead at intermission.
The Steamwheelers opened the third quarter with a 11-yard touchdown run from Edward Vander. The Blizzard extended their lead on Skylar Perry's four-yard touchdown strike to Harry Ballard III. The Steamwheelers once again pulled closer with Erickson's two-yard pass to Rudd. The Blizzard's lead heading into the fourth was 26-24.
The Blizzard went up by eight points with 1:39 left when Perry rushed in from a yard out. That was the only score, accounting for the final margin.
Perry, who started in place of Max Meylor, completed five of nine passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 15 times for 67 yards and two scores. Cagle rushed for a pair of touchdowns on four carries for 20 yards. Lowell Patron caught two passes for 27 yards. Shawn Steele II and Charles Williams each had eight tackles for the Green Bay defense. Scean Mustin recorded two sacks and Jayl Alexander had one of his own.
Erickson finished 14 or 25 for 101 yards with two touchdowns. Vander carried eight times for 37 yards and a touchdown. Both of Erickson's touchdown throws were caught by Rudd, who hauled in three passes for 24 yards. Malik Duncan led Quad City's defense with eight tackles.
Green Bay held a slight advantage in offensive yards, 154 to 144. The Blizzard had a 35-yard edge in rushing yards, while the Steamwheelers had an edge of 43 yards in the receiving game. The Blizzard were penalized seven times for 83 yards and the Steamwheelers were flagged three times for 51 yards.
The Steamwheelers will visit the Frisco Fighters on April 13 for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff. After a bye in week 5, the Blizzard will host the Sioux Falls Storm on April 19 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season.
