Sugar Skulls 56, Gladiators 49
4/6/24 --
RIO RANCHO, NM - Mylik Mitchell threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another four as the Tucson Sugar Skulls escaped New Mexico with a 56-49 win tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center.
With the win, the Skulls improve to 1-1 on the season, and the Gladiators fell to 0-3.
This is the first of three meetings between the teams this season. They line up against one another on June 1 at Tucson, and on June 29 back at Rio Rancho. Tucson also improved their overall historical series against Duke City to 7-2. That includes records of 3-2 on the road and 4-0 at home.
It took Tucson less than a minute to put points on the board as Mitchell hit Chris Jackson for a 24-yard touchdown. Duke City responded with a 14-yard run from Jeff. Carr. Mitchell's two-yard run put the Sugar Skulls up by eight. Mitchell scored on a nine-yard run later in the quarter and the lead was 21-6. The Gladiators came back on Javin Kilgo's 17-yard touchdown pass to Gourney Sloan. Ernesto Lacayo made it a dropkick point after for two points and followed it up with a deuce on the kickoff. The Sugar Skulls led 21-16 at the end of one.
Mike Jones extended the lead to 28-16 with a nine-yard touchdown on the ground early in the second quarter. Kilgo found Carr for a seven-yard touchdown midway through the quarter to cut into the lead. The Gladiators tied the contest at 28-28 with 2:31 to go on Kilgo's 12-yard touchdown pass to Gregory Dent, Jr. The Sugar Skulls retook the lead with 10 seconds to go in the first half with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Jones. Tucson led 35-28 at the half.
Greg Thomas' 42-yard return of the second half kickoff drew the Gladiators to within a point early in the third quarter, but it took only two plays for the Sugar Skulls to answer which was courtesy of a three-yard run from Mitchell. Lacayo nailed a 29-yard field goal midway through the third to make the score 42-37 in Tucson favor. Mitchell then hit CJ Tate for a 13-yard score three minutes later. The Sugar Skulls led 49-37 at the end of three.
Lacayo made it a nine-point game early in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard field goal. He followed that up with his second deuce of the game and it was a traditional one-touchdown contest. Mitchell engineered a seven-play, five-minute drive which was capped by calling his own number for a four-yard touchdown. The Gladiators were able to pull to within 56-49 on Kilgo's three-yard pass near the end of the game to Dent. Duke City would not be able to get any closer than that.
Mitchell, making his second start, completed 15 of 18 attempts for 153 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 58 yards off 11 carries and his four touchdowns. Jones added 10 carries for 31 yards and a rushing touchdown, as well as four receptions for 23 yards and a receiving score. Mike Carrigan led Sugar Skulls receivers with four catches for 50 yards. Jaylen Floyd's five tackles led the defense. Rob Sheffield and Chris Jefferson each posted interceptions to the cause.
Kilgo went 17 of 28 for 126 yards with four touchdowns and a pair of picks, while Carr rushed 11 times for 55 yards and a touchdown, while catching four passes for 31 yards and another score. Dent hauled in four passes for 33 yards and two touchdowns while Sloan had 31 yards off four catches and a score. Trevaughn Claybourne's five tackles were tops on the Gladiators' defense.
The Sugar Skulls outgained the Gladiators in total offense, 244 yards to 186. They held edges of 31 yards in the running game and 28 in the passing game. Flags flew all night long. The Sugar Skulls were penalized 15 times for 122 yards, while the Gladiators were penalized 10 times for 64 yards.
Both teams are in action next week. The Sugar Skulls will host the defending champion Bay Area Panthers on April 14 for a 3:05 p.m. kickoff. The Gladiators have a bye in week 5 before visiting the Northern Arizona Wranglers on April 20 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
