4/12/24 --
LOWELL, MA - The Massachusetts Pirates outscored the Iowa Barnstormers 10-0 in the second and never relented as they defeated the Barnstormers 54-29 tonight Tsongas Center.
The Pirates become the first IFL team to reach four wins this season. They stand at 4-0 atop the Eastern Conference standings. Three of their first four games have been at their new home. The Barnstormers fall to 0-3 on the year with all three losses coming on the road.
The teams play once more this season; on May 11 at Des Moines, Iowa. Massachusetts now leads the overall series between the teams, 4-1 with marks of 3-0 at home and 1-2 on the road. In their last meeting, the Barnstormers overwhelmed the Pirates 73-43 in Iowa last season.
Massachusetts got on the board early on a 37-yard touchdown toss from Alejandro Bennifield to Isaac Zico. Iowa's Quian Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards untouched to the house to knot the score at 7-7 midway through the opening quarter. Bennifield responded with a two-yard touchdown and the Pirates had the lead for good. They led 14-7 at the end of one.
Tavion Thomas' 11 run put Massachusetts up by two touchdowns early in the second quarter. Josh Gable extended the Pirates lead to 24-7 with 4:28 to play with a 27-yard field goal. With the Barnstormers driving in the last 27 seconds, Peterson was intercepted in the end zone by Eugene Ford giving the Pirates the ball at their own nine with 20 seconds remaining. The score remained 24-7 in favor of the Pirates entering halftime.
Iowa kicked off into the end zone and Simeon Gatling seemed to get the rouge, but an offsides penalty on the Barnstormers was accepted by the Pirates to give them the ball at their own six-yard line. Thomas made the Barnstormers pay on a nine-yard touchdown run from Thomas. Iowa stopped the bleeding a bit on Robert Washington's one-yard scoring run around the left guard. The Pirates came right back when Zico ran back the ensuing kickoff 53 yards for a touchdown to put Massachusetts back up by 24. The Barnstormers scored again when Kyle King bootlegged around the left side for the touchdown. King, the backup quarterback, had come in for Peterson earlier in the quarter. The Pirates held a 38-21 lead heading into the final quarter.
Connor Degenhardt replaced Bennifield at quarterback for the Pirates and scored on a six-yard pass to Dallas Daniels early in the fourth quarter. King was intercepted by Ford to give the ball back to the Pirates. Massachusetts turned over the ball on downs after Gable's 54-yard field goal attempt was no good. The Barnstormers scored quickly on a 37-yard touchdown bomb from King to Williams, and Williams converted on a two-point conversion run. Iowa's onside kick attempt was recovered by Zico before Tavion Thomas scored his third rushing touchdown of the night; this one of six yards. The Pirates defense scored a safety when Julius Turner sacked King in the back of the end zone.
Thomas was playing in his first contest for the Pirates and ended up giving rest to Jimmie Robinson, Massachusetts' top rusher.
