Knight Hawks 66, Gunslingers 44
4/12/24 --
HENDERSON, NV - The Vegas Knight Hawks offense scored on every possession, and their defense came up with three key stops as they improved to 3-0 tonight with a 66-44 win over the visiting San Antonio Gunslingers at Lee's Family Forum.
Vegas' start guarantees it at least a share of the top spot in the Western Conference after week 5's slate of action. The undefeated start is by far the best start for the franchise in its three-year history. It also serves as the longest winning streak in team history. This is the first game at the arena since its name change from Dollar Loan Center to Lee's Family Forum, which was announced last week.
San Antonio falls to 0-3 in its first IFL season after moving over from National Arena League during the offseason. This was the Gunslingers first-ever meeting with the Knight Hawks, and the only time the teams face one another this year.

San Antonio struck right back on a 29-yard bomb from Sam Castronova to NyQuan Murray and it was knotted at 7-7 less than five minutes into the contest. Johnson called his own number on the option play and scored from five yards out to put the Knight Hawks back in the lead. The Gunslingers answered again on Keyshawn Harper's two-yard around the left side. The Knight Hawks took the lead once more with a nine-yard sweep around the right side from Calab Holley. Vegas led 22-14 heading into the second quarter.
The Gunslingers answered with a six-yard touchdown strike from Castronova to Murray early in the second quarter. TC Stevens knotted the game at 23-23 after knocking in the deuce. The shootout continued with a 16-yard touchdown from Johnson to CJ Windham, Jr. The Knight Hawks got the first defensive stop of the night when they stopped Castronova's quarterback sneak on fourth-and-one at the 11. The Knight Hawks capitalized when Johnson rushed up the middle from 12 yards out to go up by two touchdowns. San Antonio drove down in the final seconds of the first half, but were unable to score before the clock hit zero. Vegas led 36-23 at intermission.
San Antonio took the opening drive of the second half and scored on a four-yard touchdown from Castronova to Harper to pull the Gunslingers to within six. Quentin Randolph then scored for the Knight Hawks on a 10-yard end-around to the left side. The Gunslingers returned the favor when Castronova found an open Harper on the right side of the field for a 14-yard touchdown. It took just a single play for the Knight Hawks to respond. Johnson found Windham, who split the defenders, for a 37-yard score. The Knight Hawks led 49-37 heading into the fourth.
Castronova's seven-yard rush around the left side pulled the Gunslingers to within five with 12:34 remaining. the Knight Hawks responded when a scrambling Johnson in the backfield found former Iowa Barnstormer Antonio Wimbush down the left sideline to go back up by two scores. Johnson and Wimbush connected again for the two-point conversion. San Antonio turned over the ball on downs while driving deep into Vegas territory with 2:17 left. Johnson added some icing on the cake with his 36-yard bomb to a wide open Holley down the right sideline. Kevin Macias added his first deuce as a Knight Hawk on the ensuing kickoff.
Johnson had a spectacular night with 11 completions out of 13 attempts for 160 yards, four touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for 57 yards and three scores. Holley hauled in four passes for 63 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for a touchdown. Windham scored on both his catches to go with 48 receiving yards. Bryce Hampton led Vegas tacklers with eight tackles, while Makel Calhoun added seven. Gabriel McCoy had six tackles and a sack.
Castronova completed 27 of 37 throws for a season-high 265 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had a rushing touchdown. Harper rushed for a touchdown and caught two more. DJ Meyers led all receivers with eight catches for 99 yards, and Murray finished with eight catches for 92 yards and two scores. Tristen Vance led Knight Hawk tacklers with seven.
The Gunslingers led in total yards, 307 to 271 with a 265 to 160 advantage coming in the passing game. The Knight Hawks has a 68-yard edge in rushing. San Antonio was penalized eight times for 74 yards and Vegas was flagged five times for 44 yards.
