DES MOINES, IA - Two classic franchises. One classic result.
The Arizona Rattlers made their first trip to Wells Fargo Arena since both they entered the IFL prior to the 2017 season. The result was a hard-fought 49-47 win over the Iowa Barnstormers tonight. The teams have a storied history dating back to both of their tenures in the original Arena Football League in the 1990s.
With the win, Arizona improves to 2-3 on the season and puts themselves in early position in the Western Conference playoff race. Iowa falls to 0-4 with a share of last place with the Jacksonville Sharks, who lost at home tonight to the Vegas Knight Hawks. The Rattlers lead the overall series between the teams, 11-8 (6-5 at home and 5-3 on the road).
The Rattlers scored first when Garrett Kettle found Jamal Miles on the left side. Miles scampered 38 yards for the score. The Barnstormers responded with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Kyle King to Quian Williams. The score was knotted at 7-7 heading into the second quarter.
Regi Henderson's two-yard touchdown run put the Rattlers up by a score early in the second. Henderson ran in from a yard out eight minutes later and the Rattlers were up 21-7 midway through the quarter. The Rattlers' added to the lead with a nine-yard run from Garrett Kettle. The Barnstormers cut into the lead when King found Williams for a three-yard score with three seconds left. Arizona led 28-13 at halftime.
Each team scored twice in the third quarter. King's 16-yard touchdown pass to Tre Long drew Iowa to within a touchdown early in the third quarter. Garrett's nine-yard scoring toss to Henderson put the Rattlers back up by two possessions. Robert Washington ran for a one-yard score for the Barnstormers before Kettle found Jamal Miles for a 13-yard touchdown. The Rattlers had a 42-27 lead going into the final quarter.
King found Darren Wilson for a 30-yard touchdown for Iowa, which then drew within two with an eight-yard run from King. The Rattlers lead was 42-40 with just under 10 minutes left in the fourth. They extended the lead to nine when Henderson broke out with a 46-yard scoring run. The Barnstormers drew to within two points once again when King rushed in from five yards out. The Rattlers were able to hold on in the final 1:35 for the win.
Kettle completed 16 of 21 throws for 178 yards three touchdowns and no picks. Henderson rushed 13 times for 81 yards and three touchdowns, and caught four balls for 40 yards and another score. Miles finished with Nine catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Connor Taylor and Rashie Hodge had eight and seven tackles, respectively, for the defense.
King, a rookie making his first start in place of Darius-James Peterson, went 13 of 30 yards for 171 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed nine times for 46 yards and a pair of scores. Williams hauled in eight passes for 85 yards and two scores. Dezmin Reed's seven tackles led the Barnstormers' defense and Chuckwumeka Manning recorded a sack.
The Rattlers out-gained the Barnstormers in total yards by 60. The difference was a 62-yard advantage in the running game. Arizona was flagged five times for 43 yards and Iowa was penalized four times for 75 yards.
The Barnstormers will visit the Green Bay Blizzard on April 26 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. The Rattlers will host the Jacksonville Sharks on April 28 for a 3:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
