Wranglers 39, Gladiators 23
4/20/24 --
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - In a matchup between two teams both fresh off a bye last week, the Duke City Gladiators charged into Prescott Valley in an attempt to log their first win of the season against the Northern Arizona Wranglers. Their efforts at the Findlay Toyota Center would come up short, as the host Wranglers put together an elite defensive performance to stymie the Gladiators en route to a 39-23 win.
Northern Arizona got the ball first on a drive lasting six minutes, which found the endzone on a four-yard rush from quarterback Joshua Jones. Duke City could not retaliate, going three and out before Lacayo came up short on a 60-yard field goal attempt. The Gladiators would make up for it with an interception, with Kam Prewitt getting in front of a pass from Jones. Duke City, however, gave the ball right back, with a Jon Jund pass intercepted by Ellison Jordan of the Wranglers for a 17-yard pick six. That would be all the scoring within the first 15 minutes, with the home side ahead by a count of 13 to 0.
After the teams traded another pair of interceptions, Duke City would turn the ball over for a third time in the game early in the second, when Geremy Hickbottom was sacked and stripped of the ball by Shannon Reid of the Wranglers. RZ McCorker would then get free for a 15-yard touchdown reception, running the count up to 19 unanswered points. The Gladiators scored for the first time with about four minutes to go in the half, with a five yard rush by Hickbottom. The Wranglers held the ball for the rest of the half, but were held out of the endzone at the goal line by the Gladiator defense, sending the game to halftime with the Wranglers ahead 19-7.
The Gladiators got the opening kickoff of the second half and got an important touchdown from Hickbottom on a three-yard rush. After a deuce by Ernesto Lacayo to get within three points, the Wranglers used another big play from McCorker to increase their lead, as a 41-yard touchdown reception and an ensuing deuce would put them ahead by 11. Duke City would score after a lengthy drive of over seven minutes on Hickbottom's third rushing touchdown of the game of one yard. Just before the end of the quarter, Jones would toss a dime to John Maldonado for a 25-yard score, giving the Wranglers a 33-23 lead heading into the last quarter.
Duke City's next drive would span six minutes into the fourth quarter, ending with a Hickbottom interception by Wallace Cowins. About a minute later, Kobay White hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jones, extending Northern Arizona's lead to a game-high 16 points. Duke City was again forced into a lengthy field goal attempt on its next possession, and the Wranglers were content to run out the remainder of the fourth quarter clock to secure the win. The final score was 39-23.
Josh Jones led the Wranglers to victory, with 12 completions on 18 pass attempts for 152 yards, with four touchdowns to two interceptions, logging 22 yards and another score on seven rushes. Both of RZ McCorker's receptions went for touchdowns, amassing 56 yards in total. John Maldonado had two receptions for 40 yards and a score, while Kobay White's lone catch was a 15-yard touchdown. Tramond Lofton recorded a sack, while Shannon Reid's sack led directly to a fumble recovery for Northern Arizona. Three Wranglers recorded interceptions on the night: Travion Banks, Wallace Cowins, and Ellison Jordan.
Geremy Hickbottom replaced starting quarterback Jon Jund early in the game and logged a stat line of four completions on 13 attempts for 44 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Hickbottom also led the Gladiators with 53 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 14 rushing attempts. Gourney Sloan recorded three catches for 42 yards. Defensively, Malik McDowell and Jayson Serda shared half a sack, while Kam Prewitt and Aaron Jackson each logged an interception in the loss.
Northern Arizona decisively outgained Duke City 175 to 107 in the contest, while also putting up a plus-two in turnover margin. The Gladiators committed 12 fouls costing 63 yards, and the Wranglers were flagged four times for 17 yards.
The victory stands as just the second in the all-time series for the Wranglers, as the Gladiators retain an all-time advantage of seven games to two. The next meeting between the two squads is currently scheduled as the season finale on Sunday July 21st at Rio Rancho Events Center.
The Gladiators (0-4) will visit the Vegas Knight Hawks (4-0) on Saturday April 27 for a 6:05 p.m. The Wranglers (3-1) will be on the road to battle the Tucson Sugar Skulls (1-3) on Sunday April 28 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
