Panthers 53, Strike Force 50
4/20/24 --
SAN JOSE, CA - Round one goes to the Panthers.
In a thriller which came down to the final second, the Bay Area Panthers literally outlasted the San Diego Strike Force in a battle of undefeated teams in the Western Conference tonight at SAP Center, 53-50. Bay Area trailed in the final minute until Felix Harper scored on a five-yard run to put the Panthers up by three with 13 seconds remaining. It all came down to a final field goal try from Strike Force kicker, and former Panther, Stevie Artigue. His 54-yard attempt was straight up the middle, but fell short to preserve the win for the Panthers.
This was the first of four games between the teams this season. They play again next week at San Diego. They alsy match up on June 16 at Bay Area and for a fourth time on July 20 (the season finale) at San Diego. Bay Area, whose first-ever victory came over the Strike Force at SAP Center 25 months ago, are now 3-2 against San Diego. Each team has won all of their games at home in the series.
Bay Area moves to 4-0 in a tie with the Vegas Knight Hawks for the lead in the Western Conference. The Knight Hawks dispatched the Jacksonville Sharks 60-35 tonight at Jacksonville. San Diego fell to 3-1 on the season and slips into a tie for third in the conference with the Northern Arizona Wranglers who defeated the Duke City Gladiators tonight at home, 39-23.
Bay Area scored first, albeit unconventionally. Strike Force quarterback Rudy Johnson fumbled deep in his own territory with it being recovered by the Panthers' Antwon Kincade recovering in the end zone. Johnson responded with a 34-yard scoring run. Toward the middle of the quarter with the Strike Force driving, Johnson was intercepted by Joe Foucha and returned 10 yards for a Panthers score. The Strike Force added with a 22-yard field goal from Artigue with 5:08 left in the opening quarter. JT Stokes' five-yard touchdown run put the Panthers up by 10 two minutes later. Bay Area led 19-9 by the end of the first quarter.
Johnson added a one-yard rush to pull the Strike Force to within four a little over three minutes into the second quarter. Felix Harper rushed for a two-yard touchdown to extend the Panthers lead. They went up by 16 with 3:13 remaining in the half when Harper found Jazeric Peterson for a six-yard score. San Diego came right back with Nate Davis, the usual starter in for Harper, finding Arthur Jackson III for a three-yard touchdown. Davis' pass to Jordon Kress was good and Bay Area's lead was cut to eight. That only lasted a minute as Statford Anderson rushed for a two-yard touchdown with seven seconds left. Bay Area held a 38-23 at the break.
Davis hit Jackson for a 33-yard score to start the third quarter and the Strike Force were back in business. Anderson extended the Panthers lead before Davis and Jackson connected for seven yards with 3:48 left in the quarter. Bay Area's lead was 44-37 going into the final quarter.
Craig Peterson's 27-yard field goal put Bay Area up by 10 early in the fourth. Chance Bell's 11-yard run less than two minutes later pulled the Strike Force to within four. Davis found Elijah Lilly for a seven-yard touchdown with just under five minutes left to give the Strike Force its first lead of the game at 50-47. That set up what would be Harper's game-winning touchdown run with 13 seconds remaining.
Harper finished nine of 15 for 96 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. He also rushed for a net total of 28 yards and two scores. Anderson rushed for 20 times for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns. in addition to his rushing touchdown, Stokes caught four passes for 45 yards and Joshua Tomas had three receptions for 40 yards. Kincade had 10 tackles and a fumble return for a touchdown. Ty Cromwell III added eight tackles.
Davis completed 13 of 17 passes for 141 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Before coming out of the game, Johnson had 38 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Kress gathered six receptions for 60 yards, while Jackson added five catches for 57 yards to go along with his three scoring grabs. Sherrod Williams led the defense with 10 tackles. Austin Evans and Atoa Fox each had interceptions.
The Strike Force had a three-yard edge in total offense. That included a 61-yard advantage in the passing game. The Panthers had a 58-yard advantage in the run game. San Diego was penalized 15 times for 137 yards and Bay Area was flagged nine times for 54 yards.
This was the first of two straight meeting between the teams. They clash again next week; on April 28 in San Diego with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
