JACKSONVILLE, FL - Ja'Rome Johnson's seven touchdowns and a smothering defense helped the Vegas Knight Hawks pick up their second win in as many tries against the Jacksonville Sharks tonight at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Knight Hawks' decisive 61-35 win tonight improved their record to a perfect 4-0 as they maintained a tie for first in the Western Conference standings with the Bay Area Panthers, who defeated the San Diego Strike Force tonight, 53-50. The Sharks fall to 0-4 on the season and are still looking for their first win since joining the IFL this season.
Vegas also completes the sweep of the Sharks as they won just three weeks ago, 39-33, at Henderson, Nevada.
Johnson led the Knight Hawks to a score on their opening drive on a two-yard run. Fred Payton, Jr., getting his first start at quarterback in place of the injured Conor Blount, tossed an 18-yard touchdown to Jeremiah Payton to give the Sharks a one-point lead four minutes into the first quarter. Johnson's 11-yard touchdown to Caleb Holley put the Knight Hawks back in front before Fred Payton's two-yard run put the Sharks back up. They held a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Johnson found CJ Windham for a 12-yard score early in the second. They increased their lead to two scores with Johnson's three-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Randolph later in the quarter. Jacksonville drew closer with a 14-yard pass from Fred Payton to Jeremiah Payton with 43 seconds left in the half. Johnson found Randolph again; this time for eight yards to put Vegas back up by two scores. The Knight Hawks entered intermission with a 34-21.
The Sharks came out swinging in the third quarter with Fred Payton's 12-yard touchdown pass to Kamrin Solomon. Johnson and the Knight Hawks responded with a one-yard run to increase the lead to 14 with 5:50 left in the quarter on the quarterback's one-yard touchdown. Fred Payton's six-yard run pulled the Sharks to within 41-35, but they would not get any closer for the duration of the contest. Antonio Wimbush broke away for a 21-yard scoring run late in the quarter and the Knight Hawks led 47-35 by the end of the third.
Wimbush struck again in the fourth with a one-yard scoring run with 9:25 to go. Randolph added some icing to the cake when he caught Johnson's two-yard touchdown pass at the one-minute warning.
Johnson completed 12 of 14 attempts for 184 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for 21 yards and two scores. Randolph hauled in five passes for 63 yards and three touchdowns. Wimbush netted 73 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Windham added five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown, and Holley had a pair of grabs for 52 yards and a score. Bryce Hampton led the defense with 5.5 tackles and an interception, and James Ceasar added 5.5 tackles.
Fred Payton finished 14 or 25 for 137 yards, three touchdowns and a pick. He rushed for 52 yards on 11 carries and two scores. Jeremiah Payton caught seven balls for 82 yards and two touchdowns, while Solomon finished with three receptions for 30 yards and a score. Sir Zion Dance had 9.5 tackles, including two tackles for loss. Brion Murray added 6.5 tackles and Ulric Jones had a sack.
Vegas outgained Jacksonville in total offense, 269 yards to 222. That included a 45-yard edge in the passing game. The Sharks were penalized 11 times for 124 yards, while the Knight Hawks were flagged eight times for 72 yards.
The Knight Hawks will host the Duke City Gladiators on April 27 for a 6:05 p.m. The Sharks will visit the Arizona Rattlers on April 28 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
