Blizzard 40, Barnstormers 33

GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard defense struck early and often as they helped to propel the Blizzard to a 40-33 win over the visiting Iowa Barnstormers tonight at the Resch Center.
The win is the Blizzard's fourth in a row and improves the team's record to 4-1 on the season and in a tie for second place with the Massachusetts Pirates in the Eastern Conference Standings. The Pirates play the Sioux Falls Storm tomorrow in the Fargo-IFL Gridiron Classic at Fargo, North Dakota. Green Bay also wins the season series over the Barnstormers, having defeated them 35-24 on March 23 at home. The teams play once more; on May 24 at Des Moines, Iowa.
Iowa falls to a league-worst 0-5 on the season. The Barnstormers still lead the overall series 14-10, including marks of 10-2 at Des Moines and 4-8 at Green Bay.
Jaylin Cagle returned the opening kickoff to the Iowa 17 to give the Blizzard a short field to start the game. They capitalized when Max Meylor rushed around the left guard for a six-yard score. The Barnstormers came right back with Quian Williams' end-around to the left side. Green Bay responded quickly. Harry Ballard III hauled in Meylor's 33-yard bomb with just over three minutes left in the first quarter. The Blizzard took a 14-7 lead into the first quarter with the Barnstormers driving.
Gabriel Rui's 29-yard field goal try was blocked and returned by Kevin Ransom and returned to the Iowa five, setting up Green Bay with excellent field position. The Blizzard answered on Meylor's four-yard touchdown to Demetrius Moore across the middle. Andrew Mevis' point-after try was blocked and returned by Iowa for the two-point conversion, but it was called back by offsetting penalties. Iowa scored when Kyle King found Williams across the middle of the end zone for the touchdown. After Andrew Mevis' long field goal failed, the Barnstormers got the ball back and were driving in their own territory when King's pass was tipped and intercepted by Cynte Williams who returned it to the three-yard line. Meyler did the rest with a draw straight ahead for the score. Iowa drove deep into Green Bay territory, but turned the ball over on downs, riving the Blizzard the ball with 28 seconds remaining. Mevis' 41-yard field goal as time expired gave the Blizzard a 30-14 lead at the half.
Iowa settled for a 23-yard field goal from Rui on the first drive of the third quarter to pull the Barnstormers to within 13. After getting the ball back, The Barnstormers engineered a long, sustained drive, Washington pinballed his way up the middle for a six-yard touchdown. The Barnstormers went for the two-point conversion, but King's pass to CJ Tate fell incomplete. The Blizzard led 30-23 heading into the final quarter.
Mevis increased Green Bay's lead to 10 points with a 31-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Rui hit a 25-yard field goal to once again make it a one-touchdown game midway through the quarter. The Blizzard took a two-score lead when Meylor found Moore with a 14-yard catch-and-run touchdown down the right sideline. The Barnstormers scored on a nine-yard strike from King to Williams in the left corner of the end zone with 55.8 seconds remaining and the score was 40-33. The Barnstormers attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by Ravarius Rivers. Green Bay was able to run out the clock.
Meylor completed seven of 15 passes for 86 yards with three touchdowns through the air and another two on the ground. Ballard caught a pair of passes for 45 yards and a touchdown, and Moore added three receptions for 22 yards and two scores. Rivers was all over the field for the Blizzard defense. He had 10 tackles to lead the team. Charles Williams had eight tackles and an interception, and newly signed Marquis Hendrix added seven tackles and a sack.
King, making his second start for the Barnstormers, went 18 of 39 for 131 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Washington had 47 yards off 13 carries with a touchdown. Williams was the game's leading receiver with nine catches for 74 yards and two scores. Simeon Gatling's five tackles paced the Iowa defense.
Iowa outgained Green Bay 161 yards to 106 with a 30-yard advantage in rushing yards and a 45-yard advantage in passing yards. The Blizzard were penalized eight times for 49 yards, while the Barnstormers were flagged four times for 34 yards.
The Blizzard will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on May 3 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Barnstormers will host the Quad City Steamwheelers on May 4 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
