Barnstormers 55, Steamwheelers 53
5/4/24 --
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers fended off a ferocious fourth quarter rally and held on for third first win of the season, 55-53, tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
The win moves the Barnstormers to a mark of 1-6 overall and 1-1 at home. The Steamwheelers fell to 2-4 on the year. Both teams are on the outside looking in as the playoff race gets started.
Iowa now leads the overall series between the teams, 5-4, and is 4-1 at home in those games. The teams meet up twice more this season. They will play on May 17 at Quad City and on June 15 back at Des Moines.
Iowa took an early 7-0 lead when Robert Washington plunged in from a yard out. Quad City responded with an eight-yard touchdown toss from Judd Erickson to Jarrod Harrington midway through the opening quarter. The Barnstormers retook the lead on Gabriel Rui's 22-yard field goal shortly thereafter. They led at the end of one quarter.
Quad City tied the contest with a 19-yard field goal from Kyle Kaplan. The Barnstormers took a touchdown lead with an eight-yard scoring strike from King to Darren Wilson with 8:35 left in the half. The Steamwheelers returned the favor when Erickson fired a touchdown strike to Jordan Vesey surrounded by traffic in the middle of the end zone. Washington put Iowa Back up by a touchdown, but the lead was short-lived as Erickson found Ka'ron Ashley for a 13-yard score in the right side of the end zone. King hit Wilson on a four-yard touchdown across the middle with 1:17 left in the first half to put the Barnstormers back in front. The Steamwheelers were looking for the tie, but Erickson was intercepted by CJ Tate, who returned it 46 yards to the house to put Iowa up by two touchdowns. The Barnstormers took a 38-24 lead into the break.
The Barnstormers extended their lead when Erickson fumbled the snap and Tate recovered and returned it 25 yards for a score. Rui tacked on a deuce on the ensuing kickoff to add a little insult to injury for the Steamwheelers. Iowa's defense forced a turnover on downs, which gave the Barnstormers the ball back at the Quad City 17. Rui tacked on another 22-yard field goal and Iowa was up 50-24 with 4:45 left in the third. Rui wasn't done, however, as he then hit his second deuce of the game. The Barnstormers led 52-24 heading into the final quarter.
The Steamwheelers ended their scoring drought when Erickson scrambled around the left side and flipped the ball to Peterson, but the two-point conversion pass was batted down. With the Barnstormers driving, the Steamwheelers' Malik Duncan stripped the ball from Washington. The Steamwheelers took advantage of the turnover when Erickson found Harrington in the back of the end zone to make it a two-possession game. Mike Irwin, who came in relief of Erickson, hit Keyvan Rudd for a 14-yard touchdown and Iowa's lead was cut to nine.
Iowa's Quiann Williams caught the ball across the middle, but it was knocked loose and recovered by Quad City. The Steamwheelers capitalized with a 23-yard field goal from Kaplan. Iowa countered with a 24-yard field goal from Rui to make it a nine-point lead with 52 seconds remaining. Irwin's 15-yard touchdown toss to Edward Vander pulled the Steamwheelers to within two points with 27 seconds remaining. But, the Barnstormers recovered the onside kick and were able to run out the clock.
Though official statistics were unavailable at the time of this writing, the Steamwheelers out-gained the Barnstormers in total offense, 271 yards to 122. Iowa scored a pair of defensive touchdowns, while Rui was three of three on field goal tries and added two deuces.
The Steamwheelers will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on May 10 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Barnstormers will host the Massachusetts Pirates on May 11 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season.
