SAN JOSE, CA - It was the Battle of the Unbeatens. One team would win and the other would enter the loss column for the first time this season.
Ja'Rome Johnson rushed for five touchdowns and threw for three more as the Vegas Knight Hawks maintained their unblemished record with a 62-43 win over the Bay Area Panthers tonight at SAP Center. Vegas scored 28 second-quarter points, as well as the first touchdown of the third quarter, to provide some separation early in the game. The final tally was 62-43,
The Knight Hawks improve to 6-0 on the season and are the IFL's lone undefeated team. They sit atop the Western Conference with the Panthers one game back at 5-1 after the loss.
Vegas and Bay Area line up one another once more this season; on June 29 at Henderson, Nevada. The Panthers still own the overall series between the teams, 3-2, though they suffered their first loss at home against the Knight Hawks in three meetings at San Jose.
Vegas took the opening kickoff and nearly lost possession in Bay Area territory to an interception, but the play was called back due to a roughing the passer penalty. Johnson called his own number with a five-yard sweep around the right guard and the Knight Hawks had the early lead. Felix Harper started under center for the Panthers, but the Knight Hawks defense forced a turnover on downs by Bay Area. Johnson hit CJ Windham down the right sideline to put them up by two scores. Shane Simpson ran untouched up the middle for one yard to put the Panthers on the board with 2:13 left in the first. Vegas led 13-6 after a quarter of play.
Johnson put the Knight Hawks back up by two scores on a 14-yard run around the right side which saw him flip into the end zone. The Panthers came right back, scoring on an eight-yard touchdown strike in the corner of the end zone from Harper to Jazeric Peterson. Johnson lofted a one-yard touchdown to Quentin Randolph to go up 27-12 midway through the second. Harper hit Dieuly Aristilde on a 14-yard touchdown across the middle. Harper then found Peterson for a two-point conversion to make it a one-score game.
Johnson plunged up the middle for two years to make it a 14-point game with 47 seconds remaining. Harper hit Peterson across the middle and short of the end zone and he crawled in the rest of the way to make it a seven-point game with 17 seconds remaining in the first half. Jericho Flowers returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. It was his second kickoff return for touchdown in as many games. Harper was then intercepted by James Ceasar to end the half. Vegas led 41-27 at intermission.
The Knight Hawks kept up the heat with a short touchdown run from Johnson in the third. Later in the quarter, Johnson hit Caleb Holley for a 13-yard touchdowns late in the third quarter to extend the lead to 28 points. On the Panthers' next possession, Harper was picked off by Flowers to give the Knight Hawks back the ball. They led 55-27 heading into the fourth.
Johnson made them pay with a four-yard bootleg around the right guard and the lead was up to 35 points. Simpson took the pitch to the left and coasted into the end zone from two-yards away. Daquan Neal, making a late appearance for the Panthers, hit JT Stokes for the two-point conversion. After getting the ball back, Neal scored on a two-yard run up the middle and added the two-point toss in the back of the end zone to Aristilde. B.J. Taufalele recovered a Steamwheelers fumble with 2:43 left in the game to give the Panthers back the ball at their own five.
