Steamwheelers 56, Storm 49
5/10/24 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - A classic IFL rivalry etched another legendary chapter to its lore Friday night, with the Quad City Steamwheelers and Sioux Falls Storm doing battle at Denny Sanford Premier Center. In what turned out to be one of the craziest endings to an IFL game this season, the road side pulled out the tough win, with Quad City getting the edge over Sioux Falls for the second time this season in a high-scoring 56-49 affair.
The Storm started out with the ball, and the offense picked up where they left off last week. With a seven-yard touchdown pass from Lorenzo Brown to Carlos Thompson, the Storm opened the game's scoring. After Sioux Falls forced a 34-yard field goal miss by Kyle Kaplan, their lead would be doubled on a 15-yard rush by Keyshaun Williams. Quad City found the scoreboard just before the first quarter expired with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Mike Irwin to Jordan Vesey, which cut the Storm lead to seven heading into the second quarter.
Sioux Falls engineered a lengthy scoring drive to restore the 14-point lead on a two-yard rushing score from Williams, his second of the contest. Quad City countered with a strong drive of their own, which saw Eddie Vander take a two-yard rush across the goal line. Brown would make his first mistake of the ballgame, losing a fumble deep in Steamwheeler territory that was picked up by Keshaun Moore. With 14 seconds to go in the half, Quad City tied the game, with Vesey's second receiving touchdown of 14 yards drawing the two teams level. After the Storm connected on a pair of chunk plays, the set up Dean Sarris for a 35-yard field goal, which sailed through the uprights at the gun to give the Storm a halftime lead of 24-21.
Quad City began the second half with about as hot a start as you could imagine, with Jarrod Harrington going the length of the field untouched for a 58-yard kickoff return touchdown. His heroic scamper put Quad City ahead for the first time in the game. The lead would go right back to the Storm about five minutes later on Brown's one-yard rushing touchdown, but the PAT was blocked to hold the lead to 30-28. Midway through the third quarter, Irwin tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Vander, who made a difficult play on the ball and extended Quad City's lead to five points. The Steamwheelers then forced Sioux Falls into a four-and-out, with Brown's scramble coming one yard short of the sticks. Just before the third quarter came to a close, Quad City had to settle for a 32-yard field goal from Kaplan to push the lead out to 38-30 after 45 minutes of play.
With a chance to potentially tie the game to open the fourth quarter, the Steamwheeler defense made another massive play, as Malik Duncan intercepted a pass from Brown to thwart that effort. Moments later, Irwin's four-yard rushing touchdown would put the visitors ahead by 15 points. Suddenly needing a huge play, the Storm delivered with a 36-yard pass from Brown to Thompson, the second time that pair connected for a touchdown. While the Steamwheelers were unable to respond with a touchdown, they did embark on a drive lasting five important minutes and made out with points on a 30-yard Kaplan field goal, making it a two-score, 11-point difference. Brown drove his Storm right up the field in short order, scoring with 1:30 left on an eight-yard receiving touchdown from Draysean Hudson. The two-point conversion could not be hauled in, though, keeping the Storm five points at bay. Now requiring a defensive stand of some sort for a chance at victory, the Storm capitalized on a bad snap on Quad City's first play of the drive, as Irwin was unable to recover the ball, which was recovered by Claude Davis. Brown would put the Storm ahead at the one-minute warning with a signature one-yard score, but another miss on the two-point conversion kept them ahead by just one point. With just enough time to sustain a potential game-winning drive, Irwin came through in the clutch, atoning for his mishap on the prior possession and hurling a 14-yard touchdown pass to Vander with 12 seconds left to put the Steamwheelers back ahead. After a successful two-point conversion on a Ka'Ron Ashley, the Storm needed a quick touchdown to either tie or win. With five seconds remaining and needing a 22-yard play, Brown's pass to the endzone was intercepted by Trey Smith of Quad City, which brought this thriller of a game to a close and a Steamwheeler 56-49 victory.
Mike Irwin drew the start at quarterback for the Steamwheelers and delivered 14 completions on 22 attempts for 178 yards and four touchdowns, and he also rushed eight times for 31 yards with an additional touchdown on the ground. Eddie Vander did it all tonight, with a rushing line of nine carries for 29 yards and a touchdown paired with six catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Vesey also recorded two touchdowns on three catches for 48 yards, while Jarrod Harrington had a massive kickoff return touchdown to spark the special teams. Jaylin Swan was the team leader with six tackles (one for loss) and was credited with half a sack. Trey Smith and Malik Duncan each had an interception as well.
Lorenzo Brown coincidentally also completed 14 of his 22 pass attempts for 167 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed ten times for 46 yards and two scores. Keyshaun Williams logged six rushes for 38 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 28 receiving yards. Carlos Thompson paced Storm receivers with six catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Draysean Hudson hauled in two passes for 18 yards and a score. Elijah Reed led all players with nine tackles, and Claude Davis came up with his fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter.
Both offenses gained yardage stride for stride, with Sioux Falls slightly outgaining Quad City 252 to 240. The Steamwheeler defense collected three takeaways compared to just one for the Storm, making for a +2 margin for Quad City. Penalties proved costly for both teams, with the Steamwheelers flagged 13 times for 88 yards, and the Storm guilty of eight infractions for 66 yards.
Quad City now possesses a two game to none lead in this season's series with the Storm to go along with their 38-32 overtime victory in Week 2. This was the ninth meeting in the all-time series, and the fourth where the Steamwheelers claimed victory. Notably, it's their first ever win against the Storm in Sioux Falls.
The Steamwheelers will head back home with a 3-4 record, with an opportunity to get back to even on the season as they host the Iowa Barnstormers (1-5) on Friday May 17 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Storm (1-6) will visit the Jacksonville Sharks (1-5) on Saturday May 18 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
