Knight Hawks 68, Strike Force 64
5/10/24 --
HENDERSON, NV - The Vegas Knight Hawks got into an unexpected battle against the San Diego Strike Force, but were able to come away with another win tonight at Lee's Family Forum.
Ja'Rome Johnson was 12-17 for 149 yards passing and three touchdowns, Quentin Randolph had seven catches for 123 yards and a touchdown, and the Knight Hawks held off the Strike Force 68-64 to improve to 7-0 on the season.
The 132 combined points is a new Indoor Football League high this season. It surpasses the 130 points scored in the Strike Force's 69-61 win over the San Antonio Gunslingers on April 1 (week 3).
The Knight Hawks got off to a fast start as Ja'Rome Johnson found Quentin Randolph for a touchdown on the second play of the game to give the Knight Hawks a 7-0 lead, and after Bryce Hampton intercepted Nate Davis's pass in the end zone on the Strike Force's first possession, Antonio Wimbush scored on a five yard carry to put the Knight Hawks up 14-0. The Strike Force got on the board as Chance Bell carried it into the end zone, but Vegas had an answer as Johnson found Caleb Holley for a touchdown to put the Knight Hawks up 20-6 to start the second quarter.
After Wimbush scored his second rushing touchdown of the first half, it seemed the Knight Hawks were on their way to another win. Then, the game changed on the ensuing kickoff. Elijah Lilley took the kick back for a touchdown, and with the Knight Hawks facing third-and-goal, Atoa Fox intercepted Nate Davis and returned it for a touchdown, bringing San Diego back to within 27-26 after the failed dropkick attempt. The Knight Hawks weathered the storm and scored just before halftime on a Johnson touchdown pass to Wimbush to take a 34-26 lead into halftime.
The second half opened with the Strike Force picking up where they left off, as Davis found Isaah Crocker for a 30 yard touchdown to cut the deficit to two, and the Strike Force scored on the two point conversion to tie the game. However, the Knight Hawks had an answer as Caleb Holley scored on a two yard touchdown run to put Vegas back on top. The two teams traded scores the rest of the quarter, and the Knight Hawks led 47-46 going into the fourth quarter.
Johnson scored on a quarterback keeper to put the Knight Hawks up 54-46, but Rudy Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to bring the Strike Force within two points. After the two teams traded touchdowns, Johnson scored on another quarterback keeper to put the Knight Hawks up by ten. The Strike Force weren't done yet as Davis found Elijah Lilly in the end zone for a touchdown to bring San Diego within four points. The Knight Hawks recovered the onside kick, but faced a Third and Eight with 31 seconds left. Johnson's pass intended for Caleb Holley was incomplete, but the Strike Force were called for a penalty, which gave the Knight Hawks a first down and allowed them to run out the clock.
The Knight Hawks didn't play perfect, but were able to come away with a win over a team that has shown it is capable of making the playoffs and remained undefeated on the season. The Strike Force didn't make enough plays down the stretch, but gave the last undefeated team in the IFL a fight that was unexpected.
In all, Wimbush found the end zone four times; once through the air and a trio of times on the ground. He had 10 carries for 45 yards. DJ Ford paced the Knight Hawks' defense with seven tackles, and Bryce Hampton intercepted Davis once.
Davis went 17 of 27 for 213 yards, six touchdowns and an interception. Kress caught five balls for 76 yards with four touchdowns, and had another score called back due to penalty. Chance Bell accounted for 54 all-purpose yards for the Strike Force. Sherrod Williams and Dexter Reese each recorded seven tackles for the defense.
San Diego gained 244 yards to 225 for Vegas. The Strike Force had a 64-yard edge in the passing game, while the Knight Hawks held a 45-yard advantage on the ground. The Strike Force were penalized 11 times for 81 yards and the Knight Hawks were flagged five times for 23 yards.
The Knight Hawks will visit the Tucson Sugar Skulls on May 17 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. The Strike Force will host the host the Duke City Gladiators on May 19 for a 3:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
