Blizzard 42, Oilers 22
5/11/24 --
GREEN BAY, WI - Defense has been the Green Bay Blizzard's calling card all season; why would today be any different?
It wasn't. The Blizzard held the Tulsa Oilers to a season-low 22 points as they came away with a 42-22 win this afternoon at the Resch Center.
The win improves Green Bay's mark to 5-2 on the season in the Eastern Conference and an identical record in conference play. The Oilers drop to 3-4 and into a tie for fourth place with the Quad City Steamwheelers.
The teams face off again on June 19 at Tulsa. The Blizzard now lead the overall series between the teams, 2-0, with marks of 1-0 at home and on the road.
The Oilers struck first when Green Bay's Nijul Canada forced a fumble by quarterback Daniel Smith. In the scramble for the ball, Tre Harvey of Tulsa recovered in the end zone for the touchdown. Max Meylor found Harry Ballard III for a 27-yard touchdown to put the Blizzard on the scoreboard. Green Bay led 7-6 after one quarter of play.
The Blizzard added to the lead on Meylor's one-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. Over four minutes later, Jaylyn Cagle's four-yard touchdown run extended the lead to two possessions. Tulsa settled for a 25-yard field goal from Michael Hall with 34 seconds remaining. Meylor and Ballard connected again; this time for a 16-yard touchdown 22 seconds later, and the Blizzard led 28-10 at intermission.
Meylor's two-yard scoring run put Green Bay up 35-10 midway through the third quarter. Tulsa answered when Travelle Calvin caught a 24-yard touchdown from Smith. The Blizzard led 35-16 heading into the fourth.
The Oilers pulled to within two scores on a three-yard run from Smith less than a minute into the fourth. Meylor's eight-yard touchdown to Ballard three minutes later put the Blizzard back up by 20 points. The Oilers were unable to complete a comeback from there.
Meylor completed 12 of 20 passes for 161 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for a pair of scores to go with 29 yards on the ground. Cagle added 35 yards rushing and a touchdown. Ballard caught five balls for 81 yards and three scores, while Lowell Patron had five receptions for 64 yards. Ravarius Rivers led the Blizzard with 8.5 tackles, and Christopher Biggurs and Rafiq Abdul-Wahid each recorded a sack.
Smith went 17 of 24 for 198 yards and a touchdown. Calvin had a strong game, hauling in seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Alexis Rosario added five grabs for 49 yards. The defense was led by the 7.5 sacks each from Ramon Morris and Jordan Jones.
