Panthers 39, Wranglers 36
5/11/24 --
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - It was a slugfest, but the Bay Area Panthers delivered enough of the slugs tonight to come away with a 39-36 win over the Northern Arizona Panthers at Findlay Toyota Center.
It promised to be a knock-down, drag-out contest and it was. The Panthers victory moves them to 6-1 on the season and in second place in the Western Conference standings. The Wranglers fell to 4-3 overall and into a three-way tie for third with the San Diego Strike Force and Arizona Rattlers.
The Wranglers lead the overall series, 4-3, though this is their first loss in the four games played at Prescott Valley. The teams meet once more this season; on July 7 at San Jose, California.
The teams did not score until Axel Perez's 21-yard field goal gave the Wranglers an early lead. Their drive went 39 yards in 9:28. Northern Arizona took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter.
Bay Area scored on a keeper by Shane Simpson, but the extra-point attempt from Stevie Artigue was wide left. Josh Jones found a wide-open David Elder on the right sideline, and Elder sprinted four yards across the field for the touchdown. Daquan Neal hit Jazeric Peterson in the right side of the end zone to give the Panthers the three-point lead. Perez squared the score with a 16-yard field goal with just under a minute remaining in the half. Neal found Simpson down the sideline for a catch-and-run touchdown. Perez attempted a 41-yard field goal as time expired, but it was blocked. Bay Area led 20-13 at the break.
Northern Arizona tied the game three minutes into the half on a one-yard run from Jones. Bay Area answered with a four-yard run from JT Stokes. The Wranglers once again knotted the game at 27 apiece as time expired in the third quarter.
The Panthers went up 33-27 five minutes into the fourth when Neal found Simpson for a seven-yard touchdown, but Artigue's point-after try was no good. The Wranglers were forced to try a 45-yard field goal from Perez which sailed just inside the left upright. The kick was the third-longest in the league this season; the long being Perez's 48-yarder against the Arizona Rattlers on March 16.
Simpson scored on a 22-yard touchdown run at the one-minute warning to put the Panthers up by nine after Artigue's extra-point attempt failed. The Wranglers scored on Tosin Oyekanmi's 14-yard touchdown catch from Jones. Jones throw for the two-point conversion fell incomplete. Northern Arizona attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by the Panthers who were able to run out the clock.
Neal finished 10 of 14 for 117 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Simpson gained 72 yards off 10 carries with two rushing touchdowns, and he caught four passes for 50 yards and a pair of scores. JT Stokes hauled in four passes for 37 yards. Tyler Watson tallied 7.5 tackles, while Darin Hungerford added 6.5 tackles and a sack.
Jones went 17 of 26 for 160 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Kobay White had four receptions for 47 yards, and John Maldonado added three catches for 42 yards. Wallace Cowins led the defense with 4.5 tackles, and Dajor Davenport and Tramond Lofton each had a sack.
The Panthers had a slight edge in total yards, 211 to 205, and had a 36-yard advantage in the running game. The Wranglers outgained the Panthers in the passing game by 30 yards. Bay Area was penalized seven times for 42 yards and Northern Arizona was flagged four times for 23 yards.
The Wranglers will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on May 18 for a 11:05 p.m. The Panthers will visit the Arizona Rattlers on May 18 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season.
