Wranglers 41, Pirates 40
5/18/24 --
LOWELL MA - Massachusetts Pirates, consider your self lassoed.
With tough second-half defense, and some opportune scoring early in the fourth quarter, the Northern Arizona Wranglers corralled themselves a one-point win over the host Pirates this afternoon. The Wranglers' 41-40 win moves them to 5-3 and guarantees them at last a share of third place in the Western Conference standings. With wins by the Arizona Rattlers over the Bay Area Panthers later tonight and the San Diego Strike Force over the Duke City Gladiators tomorrow, the Wranglers, Rattlers and Strike Force both host their respective games.
The Pirates slip to 5-3 in the Eastern Conference and find themselves in third place or, perhaps a tie for second should the Green Bay Blizzard lose at home to conference-leading Frisco Fighters. That game was under way at the time of this writing.
This is the only meeting between these teams this season and the first one in the series to be played in Massachusetts. Northern Arizona now holds a 2-1 lead all-time against the Pirates.
Jimmie Robinson was a force for the Pirates all day long, finishing with five touchdown rushes on 17 carries for 80 yards. He scored on the second play from scrimmage on a 14-yard run. Joshua Jones found David Elder for a six-yard touchdown to tie the game with just under six minutes to go in the opening quarter. Robinson scores again on a three-yard run with 1:30 left. Jones' 16 yard scoring to John Maldonado tied the game at 14-14 apiece as time expired in the quarter.
Robinson scored again, this time on a 21-yard touchdown run, but the Wranglers came right back with a 32-yard touchdown from Jones to Kobay White. After a one-yard touchdown from Robinson with 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Maldonado scored on a five-yard run around the right side with four seconds remaining. Northern Arizona led 28-26 at intermission.
The offenses slowed down in the second half. The Wranglers went up by eight with a 14-yard touchdown from Jones to Maldonado. The Pirates answered on Alejandro Bennifield's 37-yard bomb to Teo Redding not quite midway through the third quarter. Bennifield hit Thomas Owens for the two-point conversion and the game was knotted at 34-34. That score would remain in tact through the end of the third.
Jones found White for a 25-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Wranglers a one-touchdown lead. Robinson found the end zone for the fifth time with a four-yard rush. However, Josh Gable's point-after try was no good. With a one-point lead, the Wranglers were able to run out the clock and preserve the win.
Jones completed 21 of 30 passes for 215 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Maldonado scored twice through the air and once on the ground. He caught six balls for 79 yards. White hauled in six passes for 83 yards and two scores in the winning effort. Malik Sonnier led the defense with eight tackles, while Tramond Lofton had six tackles and a sack.
Bennifield completed four of four passes for 79 yards with a touchdown and no picks. Connor Dagenhardt came in and went four of seven for 44 yards with a pick. Redding recorded three catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Calvin Bundage led the Pirates with eight tackles and a sack, while Devin Hafford added seven tackles.
Northern Arizona outgained Massachusetts in total offense, 237 yard to 205. The Wranglers had a 92-yard edge in the passing game, and the Pirates held an advantage of 60 yards in the running game thanks, in large part, to Robinson's efforts. The Wranglers were penalized right times for 117 yards and the Pirates were flagged four times for 43 yards.
The Pirates will host the Tulsa Oilers on May 25 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. The Wranglers are at home to take on the Tucson Sugar Skulls on May 25 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
