Gunslingers 54, Oilers 43
5/18/24 --
SAN ANTONIO, TX - With a big lead on the verge of slipping away, Sam Castronova took charge.
Castronova threw six touchdown passes; three of them to NyQwan Murray, and led a late touchdown drive as the San Antonio Gunslingers overcame a late rally to defeat the Tulsa Oilers 54-43 on Military Appreciation Night at Jon Wayne Field at the Freeman Coliseum on Saturday night.
After a pair of defensive stops by both teams to start the game, the Oilers (3-5) opened the score as Andre Sale found Alexis Rosario for a touchdown to give Tulsa a 7-0 lead. The Gunslingers (4-4) answered as Sam Castronova found NyQwan Murray in the end zone to tie the game. The second quarter started with similar fireworks as Castronova found Murray on a deep pass in the end zone to give the Gunslingers a 14-7 lead.
Murray has played a big role in the Gunslingers offense this season, and he continued his great play as he caught another touchdown to give the Gunslingers a 21-14 lead. The Oilers tried to respond, but Sale threw an interception in the end zone to Svante Davenport. On the next play, Castronova found Austin Upshaw on a quick pass, and he took it 45 yards to the end zone to give the Gunslingers a 27-14 lead as the extra point was blocked. The Gunslingers got a stop right before halftime and took it down the field to set up another Sam Castronova touchdown pass; this time to D.J. Myers, to put the Gunslingers up 34-14 at halftime. The Oilers started the second half by tackling Kali Rashaad in the end zone on the kickoff for a rogue, but the Gunslingers still turned the drive into a touchdown as Castronova found Austin Upshaw in the end zone for a touchdown to give San Antonio a 40-15 lead as the extra point was no good.
Right when it seemed that the game was out of hand, the Oilers made a run as Andre Sale found Johnathan Nance for a touchdown, and on the ensuing kickoff; Kali Rashaad fumbled, and Kaytron Allen recovered for Tulsa. Two plays later, Sale found Montero Dubose in the end zone to cut the deficit to 40-29 going into the fourth quarter. The Oilers continued their momentum to start the fourth quarter as Sale found Alexis Rosario in the end zone, then Tulsa converted the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to three.
The Gunslingers had seen their 25-point lead cut to just a field goal, but they kept their poise as they drove the ball inside the Oilers five yard line, and Keyshawn Harper carried it into the end zone to increase San Antonio's lead to ten. The Oilers drove the ball inside the Gunslingers ten yard line, Sale's pass was intercepted in the end zone by Clifton Duck. San Antonio would add one more touchdown as Castronova found Myers in the end zone on fourth-and-goal.
The Gunslingers didn't play perfect, but made big plays down the stretch and answered in a big way after the Oilers made a run. Responding under pressure is the trait may come in handy as the Gunslingers continue their difficult stretch in the second half of the season.
Both teams are in action next week. The Oilers will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on May 25 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. The Gunslingers will visit the defending IFL Champion Bay Area Panthers in San Jose, California on May 25 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
