GLENDALE, AZ - The Bay Area Panthers outscored the Arizona Rattlers 47-21 in the second and third quarters combined to comfortably pick up their seventh win of the season tonight at Desert Diamond Arena.
The Panthers' 68-52 win improves their record to 7-1 on the season which keeps them in second place in the Western Conference. They moved into a tie for first with the Vegas Knight Hawks who lost their first game of the season tonight, 51-50 in overtime, to the Tucson Sugar Skulls.
Bay Area wins the season series over the Rattlers for the first time in their three-year history. The Panthers won 47-41 at San Jose on March 31. The overall series is tied 3-3 with each team holding a 2-1 record at home.
Arizona found the scoreboard three minutes into the contest on Dawson Evitts' 24-yard field goal. Bay area got on the board six minutes later with a two-yard run from Daquan Neal to JT Stokes. Dalton Sneed found Glen Gibbons, Jr. for a 15-yard touchdown. Gibbons came into the game leading the IFL in touchdown catches and receiving yards per game. The Rattlers led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.
It took the Panthers less than a minute into the second as Neal hit Stokes for a 12-yard touchdown. The Rattlers answered right back when Sneed scrambled for a 21-yard rushing touchdown. Shane Simpson put Bay Area back on top with a one-yard scoring run with 5:33 left in the quarter. Sneed hit Jackson for a 28-yard touchdown to put the Rattlers back. Less than a minute later, Neal broke off a seven-yard touchdown run and Bay Area was back on top. The Panthers were able to add another touchdown; a three-yard run from Simpson with 16 seconds left. The Panthers led 34-24 at the break.
The Panthers began to spring away from the Rattlers in the third quarter. They scored on a six-yard rush from Neal at the 11:33 mark, and just four minutes later, Neal hit Stokes for a 35-yard touchdown; Stokes' third scoring catch of the game. The Rattlers scored on a nine-yard run from Sneed with just under two minutes left in the third, but their onside kick attempt was recovered by the Panthers' BJ Taufalele and returned 10 yards for a Bay Area score. The Panthers took a 54-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
Arizona cut into the lead three-and-a-half minutes into the final quarter on an eight-yard touchdown toss from Sneed to Shannon Brooks. Brooks added a run for the two-point conversion. Neal answered with a 26-yard rush for touchdown midway through the fourth to put the Panthers up by 22. Brooks and the Rattlers once again cut into the deficit when he found the end zone from two yards out with 3:21 remaining. Simpson extended the Bay Area lead with a four-yard touchdown a little less than two minutes later. Sneed added another one-yard score for the Rattlers with 12 seconds remaining, but the outcome was academic by that point.
Neal finished six of eight passing for 90 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for 75 yards and another three scores. Simpson added 74 yards off 15 carries to his three rushing touchdowns. Stokes caught all six of Neal's passes for those 90 yards and three scores. Tyler Watson led the Panthers' defensive effort with 8.5 tackles, while Desmond Williams added 6.5.
Sneed went 19 of 26 for 198 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for a team-high 60 yards with another three trips to the end zone. Jackson had five grabs for 80 yards, while Brooks had six catches for 57 yards. Gibbons recorded five receptions for 51 yards. Each caught a touchdown pass from Sneed. Jarmaine Doubs' 5.5 tackles led the Rattlers defense.
Arizona outgained Bay Area in total offense, 281 yards to 247. The Rattlers had an advantage of 108 yards in the passing game, while the Panthers had a 74-yard edge in the running game. The Panthers were penalized three times for 23 yards and the Rattlers were cited for two infractions for 20 yards.
Both teams appear on the schedule in week 11 with each game taking place on May 25 with 6:05 p.m. kickoffs. The Rattlers will host the Duke City Gladiators and the Panthers hosting the San Antonio Gunslingers. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
