Panthers 42, Gunslingers 31
5/25/24 --
SAN JOSE, CA - The San Antonio Gunslingers gave it their all against one of the best teams in the league, but couldn't pull off the upset.
Shane Simpson had four rushing touchdowns as the defending IFL Champion Bay Area Panthers defeated the Gunslingers 42-31 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California on Saturday night.
The first quarter had no shortage of offensive fireworks as the Gunslingers and Panthers traded touchdowns; culminated with Shane Simpson scoring a rushing touchdown to give Bay Area (8-1) a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter started with defensive fireworks; as Daquan Neal threw an interception to Clifton Duck. The Gunslingers took advantage as Sam Castronova found D.J. Myers in the end zone for a touchdown. However, the extra point was blocked and San Antonio (4-5) still trailed as a result.
The Gunslingers had an opportunity to take the lead after the Panthers missed a field goal on their ensuing possession, but San Antonio couldn't convert as Castronova was intercepted in the end zone by Antwon Kincade. It was one of several times in the game the Gunslingers had the ball deep in Bay Area territory but couldn't score. The Panthers took advantage as they drove into the Gunslingers red zone, and Simpson scored his second rushing touchdown of the half to put the Panthers up by eight points. The Gunslingers answered as T.C. Stevens made a 43 yard field goal on the last play of the first half to cut San Antonio's deficit to 21-16 at halftime.
The Panthers took the second half kickoff and scored on a Daquan Neal quarterback keeper to go up by twelve, and it stayed that way deep into the third quarter. The Gunslingers were stopped after having the ball deep in Bay Area's side of the field and the Panthers looked to run away with the game. Then, Duck intercepted Neal in the end zone again and the Gunslingers had a chance to get back into the game. They took advantage of Duck's interception as Sam Castronova found NyQwuan Murray in the end zone to cut the deficit to 28-23, and T.C. Stevens converted on the deuce attempt to make it a three point game.
However, San Antonio was unable to stop the Panthers offense as Neal led Bay Area into the Gunslingers red zone; where Shane Simpson scored his third rushing touchdown of the game to put the Panthers up by ten. San Antonio had the ball in Bay Area territory to start their next possession, but Castronova's pass on fourth down was incomplete. The Panthers moved the ball down the field and Simpson scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the game to put it away.
The Gunslingers played well against the defending champions. Three of their five losses have been by one possession, and they were within three points early in the fourth quarter against Bay Area. San Antonio is very much in the Western Conference playoff conversation, and they'll have to finish games like this down the stretch if they want to have a chance to play for an IFL championship.
Both teams are on byes next week, but are back in action in week 13. The Gunslingers are at home to take on the Duke City Gladiators on June 8 with a 4:05 p.m. kickoff. The Panthers will host the Tucson Sugar Skulls on June 8 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
