Pirates 23, Oilers 22
5/25/24 --
LOWELL, MA - Calum Sutherland's 24-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter turned out to be just enough as the Massachusetts Pirates turned back the visiting Tulsa Oilers, 23-22, tonight at Tsongas Center.
The combined 45 points was the lowest result of any IFL game this season. The Pirates move to 6-3 on the season, but remain in second place in the Eastern Conference standings, pending the results of tomorrow's game between the Frisco Fighters and San Diego Strike Force. The Oilers fell to 3-6 and may be seeing their playoff window begin to slip away.
The Pirates extended their lead in the overall series to 3-0 with two of those wins coming at home. The teams play again this season, on July 20 at Tulsa.
Massachusetts got on the scoreboard first when Alejandro Bennifield capped off a nine-play, 33-yard drive with a seven-yard run. Montero Dubose's six-yard touchdown pass from Andre Sale in to tie up the game. Noah Lyles forced a safety to give the 8-6 lead by the end of the opening quarter.
The Oilers went up three-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter with a two-yard run from Tre Harvey. The Pirates pulled closer with a four-yard run from Jimmie Robinson, coupled by a Bennifield pass to Thomas Owens for a two-point conversion. Tulsa held a 15-14 halftime lead.
Tulsa extended their lead early in the third quarter when Sale found Jonathan Nance for a 17-yard touchdown. Quincy Patterson's one-yard touchdown run with 3:45 left in the quarter drew Massachusetts to within two. Tulsa held that slim lead through the end of the quarter.
The lone score of the fourth quarter was Sutherland's game winner.
Bennifield finished 12 of 20 for 92 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 27 yards and a touchdown. Robinson added 58 yards rushing to his touchdown on the ground. Owens accumulated 50 yards on four catches. Jaiden Woodbey led the defense with five tackles. Calfin Bundage added a sack and Cyrus Fagan had an interception.
Sale went 14 of 20 for 108 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. Nance caught four balls for 56 yards and a score, while Dubose had six catches for 43 yards and another. Kareem Gaulden totaled 10 tackles. Harvey added 7.5 tackle and an interception to his rushing score on the offensive side of the ball.
The Pirates held an edge of 52 yards in total offense with a 51-yard advantage in the passing game. Massachusetts was flagged 13 times for 92 yards, while Tulsa was penalized nine times for 161 yards.
The Pirates will visit the Frisco Fighters for the only time this season on June 1 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Oilers will host the San Diego Strike Force in the teams' first historic meeting on June 1 with a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
