free agency in the Arena Football League began on September 25. several teams have made key acquisitions and a number of players have already found new teams.
it was announced yesterday that Thunder defensive back Eric Crocker, who led the Thunder with 10 interceptions last season, has been assigned (the AFL's term for a team signing a player) to the San Jose Sabercats. that still leaves a few Thunder players in limbo, including quarterback Kyle Rowley and defensive lineman Antron Dillon.
in a brief twitter exchange last night with new head coach Mike Hohensee, he told me the team is looking at free agents, but is being picky in order to select the right kind of guys to fit into the Thunder scheme and community.
his original tweet to a Thunder fan named Todd Brown:
my inquiry:
Coach Hohensee's response:
now, the "so many vets" he is referring to are the over two dozen rookies from last year (some who had not played a down for the Thunder), who have just been retained as second-year players. i'm not trying to diminish what those guys bring to the table, but when you look at any league's free agency, you know that the top guys get picked up first, which is what has been happening in the AFL (i.e. Crocker).
while the Thunder are being "picky," they already have lost, and continue to lose, out on several key potential players. i don't want to see the wrong type of influence, but i do want to see the team pick up the pace as far as free agency is concerned.

I really hope the guys they're looking at are of good quality. I agree that we seem to be missing out on some of the bigger AFL names. It seems like last season, we're missing out on a lot of talent because we're getting started late.

Being picky and doing nothing are two different things. I wonder how many of these guys he is talking to are also talking to other teams and have been signed or are going to sign elsewhere. We need some action. We need to get some of these bigger free agents now before it's too late.
