Blizzard 36, Pirates 33
6/8/24 --
LOWELL, MA - Andrew Mevis connected on a 34-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to propel the Green Bay Blizzard past the Massachusetts Pirates this afternoon at Tsongas Center, 36-33.
With the win, the Blizzard move to 9-2 on the season and remain in first place in the Eastern Conference standings pending the outcome of tonight's matchup between the Frisco Fighters and Quad City Steamwheelers at Moline, Illinois. This marks the first time since 2019 that Green Bay is guaranteed a plus-.500 record. That year, they went 9-5 overall before being outsted in the playoffs by the Nebraska Danger. The Pirates remain in third place in the conference with a mark of 6-5.
This was a bit of redemption for the Blizzard, who fell to the Pirates at Green Bay, 44-40, in the season opener for both teams. Massachusetts leads the overall series 5-3 with a 3-1 mark at home. This is the Blizzard's first win at Massachusetts.
Massachusetts struck first when Connor Degenhardt zipped a six-yard touchdown to Isaac Zico in the middle of the end zone. Degenhardt had been activated from short term IR earlier in the week. The Pirates answered via a 31-yard field goal from Andrew Mevis. After Green Bay's Ravarius Rivers intercepted Degenhardt deep in Green Bay territory, the Pirates recorded a safety when Guy Thomas sacked Blizzard quarterback Max Meylor in the end zone. The Pirates led 9-3 at the end of one quarter.
The Pirates added to their lead when Degenhardt found Jimmie Robinson around the right side for an eight-yard catch-and-run for touchdown. Andrew Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards for a Blizzard touchdown. Rivers recorded his second interception of the game to give the Blizzard the ball back. They took advantage of the turnover with a 10-yard strike from Meylor to Harry Ballard III in the back of the end zone. Calum Sutherland's 39-yard field goal try was blocked as time expired in the half. Green Bay led 17-15 heading into the break.
EJ Burgess added to the Blizzard lead with a three-yard run up the middle to start the third quarter. Backup quarterback Quincy Patterson helped the Pirates cut into the lead with a two-yard bootleg around the right side, but Degenhardt's throw for the two-point conversion fell incomplete. The Pirates defense forced Green Bay into a 56-yard field goal attempt, but Mevis' kick bounced off the scoreboard. Patterson took it in from three yards out and the Pirates retook the lead late in the quarter. The Pirates led 33-27 heading into the fourth.
The Blizzard came right back, scoring on a 27-yard bomb to an open Ballard in the end zone. The Pirates answered with Patterson taking the snap and scoring on a three-yard run up the middle. However, his run for the two-point conversion was short leaving Massachusetts with a three-point lead early in the quarter. Green Bay tied it up at 33 apiece with a 19-yard field goal from Mevis with 5:47 remaining. The Pirates were driving inside of two minutes, but were stuffed at the three-yard line by the Blizzard defense which forced a turnover on downs. The Blizzard drove down to the Pirates 19-yard line where Mevis attempted and made the game winner.
Meylor finished 14 of 22 for 157 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Burgess had 36 yards off nine carries and a touchdown. Ballard caught five passes for 69 yards and a pair of scores, while Lowell Patron had five grabs for 50 yards. Rivers had an outstanding game with 12 tackles to go along with his two interceptions. Julius Wilkerson added eight tackles to the defensive effort.
Degenhardt completed 18 of 25 passes for 117 yards with a touchdown and two picks. Patterson scored three times off his three carries. Robinson gained 113 yards off 15 rushes and a score. Zico led the Pirates with five catches for 35 yards and a score. Thomas recorded 7.5 tackles to go along with a sack, and Israel Antwine added a sack of his own.
Massachusetts outgained Green Bay, 247 yards to 206. The Pirates had a 75-yard advantage on the ground, while the Blizzard enjoyed a 34-yard edge in the passing game. The Blizzard were penalized seven times for 71 yards, while the Pirates were flagged five times for 56 yards.
The Blizzard will host the Jacksonville Sharks on June 14 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Pirates are back in action on June 15 when they host the San Antonio Gunslingers for a 4:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
