Sharks 45, Oilers 42
6/8/24 --
JACKSONVILLE, FL - In a crucial matchup for two Eastern Conference teams currently outside the top-four in the standings, the Sharks welcomed the Oilers to VyStart Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, for the second meeting of the season between the two clubs. In a game script contrary to usual Sharks games this season, Jacksonville played a strong second half, propelling them to a second-half rally to defeat the Oilers for their second win of the season. Jacksonville's triumph came by a final score of 45 to 42.
The Oilers staged the first scoring drive of the ballgame, as Andre Sale fired a four-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Crockett to take an early six-to-nil lead. A lengthy Jacksonville possession would yield no points, with Fred Payton Jr. losing a fumble at the goal line which was recovered by Kaytron Allen of the Oilers. Two plays later, Sale would connect on his second touchdown pass of the young evening, a five-yarder to Alexis Rosario, which was followed up by a two-point conversion from Sale to Nance, bumping their lead to 14 points after one quarter.
Two minutes into the second quarter, Jacksonville would get on the board on a four-yard rush from running back Tyler King. The Oilers responded quickly with an 11-yard rush by Jarrod Ware Jr., playing in his first game since activation off injured reserve. The Sharks recovered with a seven-yard "Payton-to-Payton" connection, with the quarterback finding his fellow receiver Jeremiah Payton for a seven-yard score. Tulsa grinded out another touchdown drive, capped off by a one-yard plunge from Sale. Late in the second quarter, Payton would cut into the visitors' lead with an eight-yard rushing touchdown, but a failed two-point conversion kept them behind by ten points. Michael Hall attempted a 40-yard field goal at the first-half buzzer to extend the Oilers' lead, but it ventured wide right to keep the score 28-18 in favor of Tulsa at the break.
Jacksonville could not capitalize with the opening possession of the second half, quickly going four-and-out and giving the Oilers great field position. Two plays later, an 11-yard pass from Sale to Jonathan Nance increased the Oiler advantage to 17 points. Jacksonville's Payton duo would strike once more, with the pair orchestrating a ten-yard touchdown pass on the next drive. The following drive for the Oilers would reach the end of the third quarter, trying to take an 11-point lead the rest of the distance.
This game's turning point occurred on a fourth-and-goal from the Sharks' one-yard line. Andre Sale attempted a quarterback sneak, which was initially ruled a touchdown. After a Jacksonville challenge, officials determined he was down by contact short of the goal line, wiping the points off the board. The Sharks rode that wave of momentum into a quick score, with a 13-yard pass from Payton to new addition Jaedon Stoshak. The lead was further trimmed to three with a successful two-point conversion. The Oilers earned a pivotal touchdown deep in the fourth quarter, with Sale finding Crockett for a second time on a three-yard touchdown in the back of the endzone. Now needing a quick score, the Sharks got precisely that with a four-play drive ending in a seven-yard rush by Payton. After a failed onside kick attempt, the Sharks were able to keep Tulsa off the scoreboard, forcing the Oilers into a four-and-out. Now with a chance to take the lead, Jacksonville's next drive would take place with less than a minute to go in the game. The critical play was a fourth-and-one from Tulsa's one-yard line, for all the marbles. The Sharks put the ball in the hands of King, and he delivered a one-yard rushing touchdown with just a second to go, giving the Sharks their first - and only - lead of the ballgame. It would turn out to be the winner for the Sharks, who defeat Tulsa for the second time this season. The final score was 45 to 42 for the home side.
Fred Payton Jr. re-assumed his post as starting quarterback after missing last week's contest, and delivered a stat line of 19 completions on 26 attempts for 153 yards, throwing for three touchdowns and no interceptions. As a rusher, he logged 15 carries for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler King also had a pair of rushing scores on seven carries for 30 yards. Jeremiah Payton led Jacksonville's receivers, with seven catches on nine targets for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Jaedon Stoshak scored a touchdown in his Sharks debut, hauling in a pair of catches for 24 yards.
For the Oilers, Andre Sale attempted 31 passes tonight, completing 24 of them for 207 yards and four touchdowns, and also adding a rushing touchdown. Jarrod Ware Jr. got a healthy workload in his return from IR, with ten rushes for 16 yards and a touchdown, with a five-yard reception to his name as well. Alexis Rosario was Sale's favorite target, hauling eight of his 14 targets for 86 yards and a touchdown. Joshua Crockett grabbed eight-of-nine targets for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Jonathan Nance caught all seven of his targets for 59 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Kaytron Allen recovered a fumble for Tulsa in the loss.
Tonight's win is the first for the Sharks at home as an IFL member, and their second win overall. Coincidentally, their first win also came at the expense of the Oilers back in Week 8. It goes down as a season series sweep for the IFL newcomers against the second-year Oilers.
The Sharks (2-8) will visit the Eastern Conference leaders, the Green Bay Blizzard (9-2) on Friday June 14 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Oilers (3-8) will host the Sioux Falls Storm (3-7) on Saturday June 15 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
