MOLINE, IL - Edward Vander rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns as the Quad City Steamwheelers outlasted the Frisco Fighters to the tune of a 52-49 win tonight at Vibrant Arena at the MARK.
The win elevates the Steamwheelers to 5-5 and puts them squarely in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Fighters fall to 9-3 and slip into second place in the conference; one game behind the Green Bay Blizzard. The top four teams in each conference make the playoffs.
Quad City squared up the season series at one game apiece with each team winning on its home field. Frisco toppled Quad City 54-37 in the first meeting between the teams on April 13. Frisco leads the overall series 4-2 with a 3-1 mark on its home turf. Those records include playoff matchups between the teams.
Vander's 78 yards came on 13 carries and two of his rushing touchdowns came in the fourth quarter. He also caught two passes for nine yards. Judd Erickson completed 10 of 19 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for another score. Ka'Ron Ashley caught five balls for 56 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Moore paced the defense with 10 tackles, while Darreon Jackson added seven.
TJ Edwards went 16 of 24 for 196 yards with four touchdowns passing and another two on the ground. Cole Blackman has 102 yards off five receptions to go with two touchdown grabs. Lionel McConnell caught 10 passes for 80 yards and another score. Royce See tallied 8.5 tackles and Ethan Caselberry had an interception.
The Fighters had an edge in total offense, 253 yards to 216. They had a decided edge of 78 yards in the passing game, while the Steamwheelers held a 41-yard advantage on the ground. Frisco was penalized four times for 75 yards and Quad City was cited five times for 32 yards.
The Steamwheelers will visit the Iowa Barnstormers on June 15 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Fighters are on the road to face the Tucson Sugar Skulls on June 15 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
