DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers claim the rubber match.
In a dogfight, the Barnstormers claimed a 28-27 gritty win tonight over the Quad City Steamwheelers at Wells Fargo Arena. It was Gabriel Rui's 22-yard field goal with 1:16 left which was the difference maker.
The Barnstormers move to within a game and a half of the Steamwheelers, who hold the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. The Barnstormers improve to 4-7 on the season, while the Steamwheelers fall to 5-6, but still hold on to the final playoff spot in the conference.
The teams have played three times this season with the home team winning each time. This game featured considerable less offense than the other two meetings. Iowa won 55-53 at Des Moines on May 4 and the Steamwheelers won 57-55 at Moline, Illinois on May 17. Iowa Leads the overall series 6-5 with a 5-1 mark at home.
The Steamwheelers struck first when Judd Erickson found the end zone from six yards out. Daniel Smith's 29-yard scoring pass to Darren Wilson knotted the game at 7-7 with 6:25 left in the opening quarter. Quad City took the lead with a 21-yard field goal from Kyle Kaplan. The Steamwheelers took a 10-7 lead into the second quarter.
Gabriel Rui tied the game early in the second with a 29-yard field goal, but the Steamwheelers countered with a 29-yarder from Kaplan. Iowa took the lead when Smith found Keshaun Taylor for a 20-yard score. Rui tacked on a deuce on the kickoff and the Barnstormers led 19-13 midway through the quarter. The Steamwheelers retook the lead on Erickson's one-yard push into the end zone. The Steamwheelers led 20-19 at the half.
The Barnstormers provided the only score of the third quarter; a four-yard touchdown strike from Smith to Williams with 53 seconds remaining. They held a 25-20 lead going into the fourth.
Quad City scored on a four-yard touchdown from Erickson to Warren Newman early in the fourth to give the Steamwheelers a two-point lead. Rui's 22-yard field goal lifted the Barnstormers to a 28-27 lead with 1:16 remaining in the contest.
Smith finished 11 of 23 for 112 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Wilson caught four passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns, while Taylor had four grabs for 36 yards and another score. Ty Tate led the team with 10 tackles, and Ian McBurrough had nine.
Erickson completed 15 of 27 for 139 yards with a touchdown through the air and two more on the ground. Newman caught four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Darreon Jackson paced the defense with 7.5 tackles.
Quad City had an edge in total offense; 188 yards to 120. The Steamwheelers had a decided edge of 41 yards in the rushing game and an advantage of 17 yards in the passing game. The Steamwheelers were penalized six times for 37 yards and the Barnstormers were flagged three times for five yards. Neither team turned the ball over in the game.
Both teams are in action next week. The Barnstormers will host the Tulsa Oilers on June 22 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Steamwheelers are at home to face the Green Bay Blizzard on June 22 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
