GLENDALE, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers always seem to shine in the second half of the season. This year is no exception.
The Rattlers held off the Northern Arizona Wranglers tonight, 56-49, to move into third place in the Western Conference standings with five games remaining in the season. With the win, they leapfrogged the Wranglers, who are now in fourth place. The Rattlers are 8-4 and have won seven of their last eight games. The Wranglers fell to 7-4 and are now a half game back of the Rattlers in fourth place.
Arizona also completes the season sweep against Northern Arizona. The Rattlers defeated the Wranglers 51-40 on opening day, May 16. They also lead the overall series against the Wranglers 8-4 which includes a 5-2 mark at home. Those notes include playoff action.
Northern Arizona found the scoreboard first with a 20-yard touchdown pass to John Maldonado from Joshua Jones. The extra point attempt failed, and Arizona took the lead with a 33-yard touchdown toss from Dalton Sneed to Corey Reed, Jr. The Wranglers took the lead with a 46-yard touchdown from Jones to Arsiah "RZ" McCorker. The Rattlers scored again on a 17-yard touchdown from Sneed to Reed. The Rattlers led 14-13 at the end of the opening quarter.
Arizona took control in the second. They scored just over a minute into the quarter on a two-yard run from Shannon Brooks, and they followed that up five minutes later with a seven-yard from Brooks. Jones found Maldonado for an 11-yard score which drew the Wranglers to within eight points. Sneed and Reed hooked up for the third time of the half; this one of 24 yards with 4:28 left in the half. Arizona took a 35-20 lead into the break.
The teams essentially traded scores in the second half. Jones scored on an eight yard run, and Axle Perex hit a dropkick two-point kick to make it a seven-point game. with 6:34 left in the quarter. Sneed found Brooks for a nine-yard touchdown five minutes later. Kobay White's nine-yard run pulled the Wranglers to within seven with 1:23 remaining in the third. The Rattlers led 42-35 at the end of three.
Sneed found Brooks for a five-yard touchdown strike five minutes into the fourth, but Jones hit White for a 12-yard touchdown to make it a one-point game again with just under seven minutes remaining. Sneed then hit Nih-Jer Jackson for a seven-yard touchdown to put the Wranglers up by two scores. McCorker rushed for a five-yard touchdown with 2:17 left and Perez nailed the dropkick point-after try, but the Wranglers were unable to complete the comeback as the Wranglers were unable to complete the comeback.
Sneed completed 13 of 19 passes for 195 yards with seven touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown in addition to 34 yards. Brooks gained 33 yards on the ground with a touchdown, but had touchdowns on all three of his receptions for 33 yards. Reed caught five passes for 100 yards and three scores. Davontae Merriweather had six tackles and Dillon Winfrey recorded a pick.
Jones, a leading candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year, finished 14 or 20 for 165 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown. McCorker accumulated 83 yards off four catches and a touchdown. White had five grabs for 44 yards with a touchdown through the air and another on the ground. Wallace Cowins tallied six tackles for the Wranglers' defense.
The teams were matched closely with the Wranglers having just a five-yard advantage of total offense. That included a 31-yard edge in the rushing game, while the Wranglers had a 27-yard advantage in the passing game. The Rattlers were flagged five times for 38 yards while the Wranglers were penalized three times for 20 yards.
The Rattlers will visit the Vegas Knight Hawks on June 22 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. The Wranglers will host the San Antonio Gunslingers on June 23 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
