Steamwheelers 37, Blizzard 27
6/22/24 --
MOLINE, IL - It will never be Packers-Bears, but the Blizzard-Steamwheelers rivalry is one of the best in the Indoor Football League.
On Saturday night, the Steamwheelers reminded everyone.
Judd Erickson threw three touchdowns; all of them to Ka'Ron Ashley, and Kyle Kaplan converted a late field goal to put the game away as Quad City pulled off an upset of the arch rival Green Bay Blizzard 37-27 at Vibrant Arena at The MARK in Moline, Illinois on Saturday night.
Defeating a team three times is never easy, and the Steamwheelers showed why as they got off to a fast start. Judd Erickson made an impact early as he found Ashley for two touchdowns in the first quarter to give Quad City a 14-0 lead. The Blizzard (10-3) responded as Andrew Mavis converted a field goal to cut the deficit to 14-3, but Ashley responded as he caught a pass from Erickson in the end zone to give the Steamwheelers (6-6) a 21-3 lead.
Green Bay isn't in first place in the Eastern Conference by accident, and they rallied back with a Jalyn Cagle touchdown and an Andrew Mavis field goal to cut Quad City's lead to eight points. Despite Kaplan converting a field goal before halftime to give the Steamwheelers a 24-13 lead, the Blizzard were back in the game and had momentum. It carried over into the third quarter as E.J. Burgess Jr. scored to bring Green Bay within 24-20; which remained the score going into the fourth quarter.
The Blizzard drove into the Steamwheelers red zone, but couldn't convert on Fourth and Five to take the lead. Green Bay didn't let that missed opportunity effect them as they only gave up a field goal on the ensuing Quad City possession, and the Blizzard took advantage as Max Meylor scored on a quarterback keeper to tie the game.
Quad City responded as Edward Vander scored to give the Steamwheelers a 34-27 lead, and the Blizzard took the field with a chance to tie the game. Green Bay drove into Quad City territory, but Meylor's pass on Fourth and Ten was incomplete. The Steamwheelers couldn't run out the clock, but Kyle Kaplan converted a field goal to secure the win for Quad City.
The Steamwheelers kept their playoff hopes alive despite blowing an 18 point lead and remain in the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Blizzard showed everyone why they are one of the top teams in the IFL as, even in defeat, they never quit at any point. They also remain in first place in the Eastern Conference despite the loss.
The Blizzard will visit the Tulsa Oilers on June 29 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Steamwheelers will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on July 1 with kickoff scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
