RIO RANCHO, NM -Daquan Neal rushed for five touchdowns, including three during a crucial stretch of the third and fourth quarters, as the Bay Area Panthers held off the Duke City Gladiators tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center by a 34-32 tally.
The Panthers remain in first place in the Western Conference with a mark of 10-2. They are one game ahead of the Vegas Knight Hawks, who defeated the Arizona Rattlers tonight in a game played simultaneous with this one. Bay Area and Vegas play next week. The Panthers are looking to hold on to that top spot and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Gladiators fall to 1-11 and have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
The teams play once more this season; July 13 at San Jose, California. Bay Area also takes a 3-2 lead in the overall series and are 2-1 at Rio Rancho.
Neal completed 14 of 20 passes for 118 yards with no touchdowns and no picks. He did his damage on the ground with 19 carries for 85 yards and five scores. Former Tucson Sugar Skull Benjamin Jones, making his second appearance for the Panthers, had 46 yards on 15 rushes. JT Stokes and Joshua Tomas each caught five passes for 51 and 41 yards, respectfully. Antwon Kincade had 6.5 tackles and a pair of sacks to lead the Bay Area defense.
Hasan Rogers, making his second start for the Gladiators, went nine of 18 for 82 yards with three touchdowns. He also rushed for 47 yards. Gourney Sloan hauled in five passes for 55 yards and two scores. Joe Powell and Kwame Sutton each recorded nine tackles, and Jamel Williams had 8.5 tackles and two sacks.
Bay Area gained 225 yards to 128 yards for Duke City. The Panthers had 131 yards on the ground to 53 for the Gladiators, and had a 19-yard edge in the passing game. The Panthers were flagged six times for 81 yards and the Gladiators were penalized two times for 49 yards.
The Gladiators will host the Tucson Sugar Skulls on Jun 29 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Panthers will visit the Vegas Knight Hawks on June 29 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
