Strike Force 41, Sugar Skulls 40
6/22/24 --
TUCSON, AZ - Rudy Johnson's 13-yard touchdown with 1:50 remaining proved to be just enough for the Stan Diego Strike Force as they slipped past the Tucson Sugar Skulls tonight at the Tucson Convention Center.
The win, coupled with the Arizona Rattlers' loss tonight to the Vegas Knight Hawks, propelled the Strike Force into fourth place in the Western Conference standings. San Diego and Arizona are both 8-5 with the Strike Force holding a slight tiebreaker with a 7-4 conference record compared to 5-5 for the Rattlers. Sitting just ahead in third place are the 7-4 (overall) Northern Arizona Wranglers who have a home game against the San Antonio Gunslingers tomorrow.
The Sugar Skulls, who were eliminated from playoff contention last week, fall to 2-10 on the season. Despite being in the same conference and relatively geographically close, the Strike Force and Sugar Skulls only play once this season. Tucson still leads the overall series, 7-4, but is 2-4 at home against San Diego.
Nate Davis completed 15 of 30 throws for 196 yards with five touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Johnson, the backup quarterback, has been utilized as a rusher and receiver over the past few weeks. Isiah Cox hauled in three passes for 86 yards and three touchdowns, while Jordan Kress added three grabs for 47 yards and a score. Sherrod Williams led the defense with eight tackles. Atoa Fox had two interceptions and Tariq Thompson had one.
Recently signed Kenyatta Allen finished 10 of 19 passing with a touchdown and three interceptions. He also rushed for 65 yards and a score. Davonte Sapp-Lynch rushed for two touchdowns, and Brian Smith had two catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. JaQuez Jackson'5 five tackles led Tucson's defense. Derrion Rakestraw and AJ Beach each picked off a pass.
San Diego held a slight edge of 14 yards of total offense (230-216). That included an advantage of 93 yards in the passing game. Tucson outgained San Diego on the ground of 79 yards. The Sugar Skulls were penalized nine times for 56 yards and the Strike Force were flagged six times for 57 yards.
The Sugar Skulls will visit the Duke City Gladiators on June 29 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Strike Force will visit the Northern Arizona Wranglers on June 29 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
