Oct. 13 -- In an official statement released today, the Arena Football League announced that the San Antonio Talons will skip the 2015 season.
The league has been working with potential new owners, including the San Antonio Spurs, to keep the Talons among the current slate of AFL teams, but have been unsuccessful. A number of deadlines for new Talons' ownership have come and passed. According to the statement, the league will continue its efforts to bring back the Talons or to bring another team to San Antonio.
The AFL's statement reads as follows:
"CHICAGO – The San Antonio Talons will go dormant for the 2015 AFL season, the Arena Football League office announced today. Discussions are ongoing with interested parties to operate a San Antonio franchise again in the near future.
'San Antonio is a very desirable city for the AFL and efforts will continue to bring Arena Football back to the Alamo City,' AFL Commissioner Scott C. Butera said. 'The AFL has the utmost appreciation for the passion and support Talons fans have shown their team and we look forward to returning to San Antonio.'
The addition of the Las Vegas Outlaws means that season 28 of the AFL will commence with 13 franchises competing in an 18 game schedule spread out over a 20 week regular season. The full 2015 regular season schedule will be made available in the coming weeks."
The league already lost a team -- the Iowa Barnstormers -- which made the decision to move their play to the Indoor Football League beginning in 2015. The AFL also has gained an expansion franchise in the Las Vegas Outlaws, which are owned by Motley Crue rocker Vince Neil.

I thought I would add to this is that of the 13 teams in play this season, the conference and division breakdown will likely look like the following:
NATIONAL CONFERENCE West Division - Arizona Rattlers, Las Vegas Outlaws, Los Angeles KISS Pacific Division - Portland Thunder, San Jose Sabercats, Spokane Shock
AMERICAN CONFERENCE South Division - Jacksonville Sharks, New Orleans VooDoo, Orlando Predators, Tampa Bay Storm East Division - Cleveland Gladiators, Philadelphia Soul, Pittsburgh Power

Does this kind of thing happen often? Usually there are a couple or a few team changes from year to year in the AFL. From 2013 to 2014 there were four, with two expansion teams (Thunder and KISS) and two teams which folded (Utah Blaze and Chicago Rush). So far this year there have been three, with one expansion team (Las Vegas Outlaws), one folded team (Talons) and one team which moved down to the IFL (Iowa Barnstormers). There was talk that the New Orleans VooDoo might fold, but it appears they are set to go for at least the 2015 season.
