LOWELL, MASS - Alejandro Bennifield tossed four touchdown passes to Thomas Owens as the Massachusetts Pirates turned back the visiting Quad City Steamwheelers, 52-35, tonight at Tsongas Center.
Massachusetts clinches a playoff spot with the win. The Pirates move to 8-6, a game and a half ahead of the Steamwheelers for third in the Eastern Conference standings. The Green Bay Blizzard and Frisco Fighters have already locked up the top two seeds in the conference. The Steamwheelers fall to 6-7, in fourth place, just a game ahead of the Tulsa Oilers. The top four teams from each conference reach the playoffs.
The teams split the season series as the Steamwheelers defeated their conference rivals, 54-43, at Moline, Illinois on April 20. They now lead the overall season series, 4-2, including a 3-1 mark at home.
Kyle Kaplan's 41-yard field goal on the opening drive put the Steamwheelers up by three early. Jimmie Robinson answered for the Pirates with a three-yard touchdown on the ground. The Steamwheelers re-took the lead when Judd Erickson found Ka-Ron Ashley for an eight-yard touchdown strike. The Pirates went up again on Bennfield's scoring toss of 15 yards to Robinson, and Massachusetts was up 13-10 by the end of the first quarter.
After forcing a turnover on downs, the Pirates increased their lead on Robinson's 26-yard touchdown run. Quad City's Jarrod Harrington returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards for a Stewmwheelers score. Bennifield then found Owens for a three-yard touchdown toss midway through the second quarter. Kaplan added a 29-yard field goal with 1:29 left in the half. Massachusetts took a 27-20 lead into the break.
The Pirates increased their lead early in the third quarter with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Bennifield to Owens. They topped that off with a rouge on the following kickoff. The Steamwheelers pulled to within a touchdown on a 30-yard scoring run from Edward Vander. He also rushed for the two-point conversion to make it a one-touchdown game. Bennifield found Owens for a six-yard touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the third. The Pirates led 42-28 with three quarters completed.
Erickson tossed a two-yard score to Warren Newman III before Bennifield hit owns midway through the fourth for a 16-yard touchdown midway through the quarter. Henry Nell tacked on a 20-yard field goal with 1:16 remaining.
Bennifield completed 13 of 15 passes for 132 yards with five total touchdowns and one interception. He also netted 27 yards in the rushing game. Robinson rushed 13 times for 65 yards and two scores, and added another through the air. Owens accumulated 36 receiving yards and caught a touchdown on each of his receptions. Darren Carrington added a pair of grabs for 42 yards. Jaiden Woodbey paced the Pirates defense with 6.5 tackles and Julius Turner recorded a sack.
Erickson finished 11 of 28 for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Vander rushed for 46 yards; 30 of those coming on his touchdown scamper. Keyvan Rudd led the way for the Steamwheelers' receiving corps with four catches for 31 yards. Alan Arsianian's seven tackles led the defense and added five tackles to his interception.
Massachusetts outgained Quad City in total offense, 213-121. That included advantages of 66 yards in the passing game and 29 yards on the ground. The Pirates were penalized seven times for 53 yards and the Steamwheelers were flagged five times for 69 yards.
The Pirates will visit the San Antonio Gunslingers on July 6 with kickoff set for a 4:05 p.m. kickoff. The Steamwheelers will host the Sioux Falls Storm on July 6 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
