Wranglers 47, Panthers 46
7/7/24 --
SAN JOSE, CA - The Northern Arizona Wranglers came to Northern California with heavy hearts and left with a big win.
Playing their first game after the sudden passing of Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams coach David Moran, the Wranglers overcame a 25-point deficit to defeat the defending IFL Champion Bay Area Panthers 47-46 on Sunday afternoon at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
Northern Arizona secured the win after Axel Perez converted on a deuce attempt, which was preceded by a drop kick attempt, with four seconds left.
The Panthers started strong with Daquan Neal throwing a pair of touchdown passes to Josh Tomas, which gave Bay Area a 14-3 lead going into the second quarter. Neal found J.T. Stokes in the end zone on Fourth and Goal to put Bay Area up by eighteen points. Axel Perez converted on a standard drop kick attempt to cut the deficit to 21-7, but the Panthers responded as Neal found Pierre Williams in the end zone to give Bay Area a 28-7 lead. Northern Arizona answered with Josh Jones scoring on a quarterback keeper, along with Perez converting on the drop kick attempt, but the Panthers responded with Shane Simpson scoring on the ground to put Bay Area up 34-15 at the break.
Neal found Stokes in the end zone to give the Panthers a 40-15 lead in the third quarter, which was answered with Jones find Tosin Oyekanmi in the end zone to cut the deficit to 17 points after Perez converted on the drop kick attempt; setting up an incredible fourth quarter.
Neal found Stokes in the end zone to put Bay Area up 46-23, but the Wranglers came back with Jones finding Oyekanmi in the end zone to cut the deficit to 46-31 after the Perez drop kick. The Wranglers recovered the onside kick and scored a touchdown, but Perez couldn't missed the drop kick attempt and the deficit remained at nine points with one minute left. Northern Arizona recovered another onside kick and Jones converted a Fourth and Five by finding John Maldonado for a First and Goal. That was followed by Jones finding Gene Coleman II in the end zone and Axel Perez converted on the drop kick attempt to cut the deficit to one point with four seconds left.
The Wranglers best chance of winning was for Perez to convert on the deuce attempt. With the pressure on his shoulders, Perez nailed the deuce to give Northern Arizona the lead. Stevie Artigue ran on to the field to attempt a 56-yard field goal to win the game, but it went wide left.
The Wranglers have had an emotional week after the loss of David Moran, and they honored him by stunning the defending champions on their home field in an incredible comeback. Somewhat fittingly, it was their special teams that led Northern Arizona to the win, as Perez converted not only on the game winning deuce, but several drop kick attempts throughout the game.
Jones completed 28 of 52 for 290 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. he also rushed for 23 yards and a pair of scores. Gene Coleman II had nine catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns, and Oyekanmi caught six passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Kobay White and John Maldonado accumulated 53 and 52 receiving yards, respectively. Kevin Hyde led the defense with six tackles.
Daquan Neal went 13 of 18 for 171 yards with six touchdowns. He added 45 yards on the ground. joshua Tomas caught five balls for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Pierre Williams added five catches for 61 yards and a score, and JT Stokes had three grabs for 36 yards. Antwon Kincade had a masterful game on defense with 15 tackles. Darin hungerford contributed a sack and Tyron Cromwell added an interception.
The Wranglers will host the Vegas Knight Hawks on July 13 for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff. The Panthers are at home to battle the Duke City Gladiators on June 13 with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
