Barnstormers 65, Storm 54

DES MOINES, IA - In a battle between two of the three longest-tenured teams in the Indoor Football league, the Iowa Barnstormers put away the Sioux Falls Storm, 65-54, tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
Both teams have already been eliminated from playoff contention. The Barnstormers won the first matchup, 47-45, at Sioux Falls on June 1. Iowa moves to 5-10 with the win, while Sioux Falls falls to 3-10 and sits in at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
The Barnstormers' win ties the overall series between the teams at 13-13. Interestingly, each team is 8-5 overall against one another.
Dean Sarris' 42-yard field goal put the Storm on the board with two minutes into the game. Brandon Alt's 12-yard touchdown toss to Quian Williams gave the Barnstormers. After getting the ball back, the Barnstormers tacked on a 33-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui, who also tacked on a deuce on the ensuing kickoff and Iowa led at the end of one, 19-3.
Alt hit Keshaun Taylor for a five-yard touchdown to increased Iowa's lead to 23 points. Storm quarterback Jyra Wright scrambled for a 30-yard touchdown to cut into the lead with with 50 seconds remaining in the first half. Rui nailed a 30-yard field goal as time expired to give the Barnstormers a 29-10 lead at the half.
Iowa offensive lineman scored on a one-yard run a minute into the third quarter and Rui added another deuce on the following kickoff. Wright ran for a seven-yard touchdown to pull the Storm closer, but alt found Williams for a 23-yard score. Wright threw a 45-yard bomb to Draysean Hudson for the Storm, but the Barnstormers came right back with a 18-yard scoring toss from Alt to Williams. The Barnstormers took a 53-24 lead into the fourth and final quarter.
Wright found Bell for a 19-yard touchdown to pull the Storm to within 23 points again. Rui added a 19-yard field goal and a deuce to extend their lead to 58-30 with 11:37 to play. The Storm came back with a 21-yard pass from Wright to KeShawn Williams midway through the quarter. They attempted the onside kick, but it was recovered by the Barnstormers. Ezekiel Lang's catch-and-run touchdown from Alt gave Iowa a 65-38 lead. Wright hit Kentrez Bell on a 25-yard touchdown toss. Wright scrambled around the right side for the two-point conversion. Rui's long field goal attempt was blocked and had to be pushed out of the end zone by Jefferson Fritz which resulted in safety for Sioux Falls. Wright tossed a 25-yard touchdown strike to Bell for the Barnstormers. Hudson caught his second touchdown pass of the game, of seven yards from Wright. with less than two minutes left before the Barnstormers were able to, essentially, run out the clock.
Alt finished 14 of 29 for 190 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. Williams' three touchdown catches came off seven catches for 95 yards. Lang caught four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, and Taylor finished with three grabs for 39 yards and two scores. Ian McBurrough's 4.5 tackles led Iowa's defense with J'Von France adding a sack.65 tards
Wright completed 12 of 28 for 191 yards with five touchdowns and a pick. He rushed 10 times for 80 yards and two scores. Bell had three receptions for 65 yards. Hudson caught two balls for 52 yards. Each receiver caught two touchdown passes. Elijah Reed recorded 6.5 tackles for the Storm defense.
Sioux Falls outgained Iowa in total yards, 294 for 208 yards. That was indicative of what happened in the running game where the Storm had an 85-yard edge. The Storm were penalized nine times for 62 yards, while the Barnstormers were flagged twice for 18 yards.
Next week the Storm will host the Green Bay Blizzard and the Barnstormers will visit the Frisco Fighters. Both games are scheduled for July 20 with 5:05 p.m. kickoffs. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
