7/13/24 --
SAN JOSE, CA - The Bay Area Panthers clinched the number one seed in the Western Conference as they seemingly easily dispatched the Duke City Gladiators tonight at SAP Center.
At 12-3, Bay Area had clinched a playoff spot in the competitive conference two weeks ago, but now the Panthers will have home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. Their opponent won't be determined until next week's results. The Gladiators, however, fall to 2-13 and have just their season finale left next week. (see below).
The Panthers have yet to lose to the Gladiators in 11 tries with six of those coming in the friendly confines of the SAP Center. Bay Area defeated Duke City in the first matchup between the teams this seas, 34-32, at Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Hasan Rogers put the Gladiators on the scoreboard less than a minute into the game with a 24-yard scramble into the end zone. Daquan Neal brought the Panthers back with his two-yard touchdown throw to JT Stokes four minutes later. Those were the only points in the low-scoring opening quarter resulting in a 7-7 score heading into the second.
The Panthers scored on a safety shortly into the beginning of the quarter. Rogers' three-yard run put Duke City up three-and-a-had minutes into the quarter. The Gladiators came back with a 15-yard scoring strike to Tamorrion Terry from Rogers. Simpson's one-yard run with four seconds to go in the quarter gave the Panthers a 23-21 lead at the break.
The third quarter was where the Panthers took control of the contest. They scored on the opening possession with a seven-yard run from Simpson. Shortly thereafter, Neal found Jazeric Peterson for a 22-yard touchdown which gave them a 15-point lead. Javin Kilgo's 24-yard scoring pass to Terry pulled the Gladiators to within a touchdown late in the quarter, but Peterson returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards for a Panthers score. Bay Area was ahead 43-29 after three quarters of play.
Only one score occurred in the fourth. Simpson rushed in from two yards out to put the panthers up by three scores with 5:37 remaining. Aaron Jackson's 52-yard kickoff return for touchdown on the following kickoff was taken off the board.
Neal threw 14 passes with 12 completions for 136 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Simpson gained 42 yards on 15 carries to go along with his three rushing touchdowns and receiving score. Stokes had four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown to lead the receiving corps. Antwon Kincade, who came in as the IFL's leading tackler, added 8.5 to his tally tonight. Tyrone Cromwell III and Joe Foucha each had an interception apiece.
Rogers started at quarterback for the Gladiators, completing seven of 18 passes for 35 yards. Kilgo, who started the season as the team's starter, completed eight of 17 throws for 108 yards. Each player had a touchdown toss and an interception. Rogers rushed eight times for 60 yards and two scores. Terry hauled in six passes for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
