Rattlers 41, Gunslingers 34
7/20/24 --
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Shannon Brooks put the Arizona Rattlers and their playoff hopes on his back.
Brooks scored three rushing touchdowns as the Rattlers defeated the San Antonio Gunslingers 41-34 at Jon Wayne Field at the Freeman Coliseum on Saturday night to secure their fourteenth straight playoff berth.
Both sides of the ball came to play in the first quarter, starting with the defenses as Svante Davenport intercepted Dalton Snead in the end zone and the Gunslingers (8-8) offense turned it into a touchdown as Sam Castronova found NyQwan Murray; who spun out of several tackles to get into the end zone and give San Antonio a 7-0 lead. The Rattlers (11-5) responded with Shannon Brooks scoring a touchdown on the ground to tie the game, and Jermaine Doubs intercepted Castronova on the Gunslingers next possession.
Arizona had momentum at the end of the first quarter and it carried over to start the second as Brooks scored another rushing touchdown to give the Rattlers a 14-7 lead. San Antonio drove deep into Arizona territory, but Castronova's pass on Fourth Down was incomplete and the Rattlers took over with a chance to increase their lead. The Gunslingers came up with a stop and Keyshawn Harper scored on the ground to tie game at 14-14 late in the second quarter.
Arizona drove into the Gunslingers red zone and scored on a controversial play as Snead found Corey Reed Jr. in the end zone to put the Rattlers up 21-14 with two seconds left in the first half. Reed didn't seem to get one foot down in the end zone, but it was ruled a touchdown and the section of Arizona fans behind the Rattlers bench roared in celebration.
The second half started with similar results; for the offenses. Sam Castronova found D.J. Myers on Fourth Down for a First Down inside the red zone and the Gunslingers scored to tie the game. The Rattlers responded as Dalton Snead scored on a quarterback keeper to put Arizona up 27-21 after the extra point by Dawson Evitts went off the left upright.
The Gunslingers couldn't convert a Fourth and Ten to start the fourth quarter and the Rattlers took advantage of the turnover as Shannon Brooks scored another rushing touchdown to put Arizona up 34-21 moments into the fourth quarter. San Antonio answered as Castronova found Myers in the end zone on Fourth Down to cut the deficit to 34-27 as the snap on the extra point attempt was high and the Gunslingers couldn't convert on the two point conversion.
The Rattlers responded as Dalton Snead scored on a quarterback keeper to put Arizona back up by fourteen points. San Antonio didn't go away as Castronova found NyQwan Murray in the end zone to cut the deficit to six points, but Nij-Her Jackson recovered the onside kick for the Rattlers; who ran out the clock to secure the win and clinch a playoff spot.
The Gunslingers won't make the playoffs, but they showed they have what it takes to compete in the Indoor Football League; finishing with a .500 record in their first season as a member of the IFL. San Antonio isn't far off from making the playoffs and the team is interesting to watch next season.
