Knight Hawks 49, Sugar Skulls 25
7/20/24 --
HENDERSON, NV - Ja'Rome Johnson threw for five touchdowns and rushed for two more as the Vegas Knight Hawks clinched the second seed in the Western Conference with a 49-25 win over the Tucson Sugar Skulls tonight at Lee's Family Forum.
With the Knight Hawks' win, and the San Diego Strike Force's loss to the Bay Area Panthers, Vegas moved into second in the conference. They will host the Arizona Rattlers Saturday, July 27 with kickoff set for 7:05 p.m. pacific time. The Knight Hawks finish the regular season at 11-5 after starting off with seven straight wins. Arizona shares the same record, but fell to the third seed due to Vegas' higher conference win percentage; the first tiebreaker.
The Sugar Skulls fell to 2-14 on a disappointing season which saw them eliminated from the playoffs four weeks ago. One of those two wins came over the Knight Hawks at Tucson; a 51-50 overtime thriller on May 18. Tucson leads the overall series, 4-2, but have not won at Henderson in three tries.
Johnson completed 10 of 14 passes for 180 yards and an interception to go with his five touchdown tosses. He gained 51 yards off 13 rushes in addition to his two rushing scores. Quentin Randolph hauled in three passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns, while CJ Windham added three receptions for 42 yards and a pair of scores of his own. Malik Hausman led the Vegas defense with eight tackles and an interception. Darius Williams had an interception and Maurice Jackson had a fumble recovery.
Vincent Espinoza started for the Sugar Skulls and completed 10 of 21 throws for 87 yards with a touchdown and two picks. He also rushed eight times for 34 yards. Davonte Sapp-Lynch had 10 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown, and caught six passes for 48 yards and another score. Robert Sheffield's five tackles led the way for the defense. KJ Milner recorded two sacks. Jaquez Jackson added a sack and Ahmad Lyons had an interception.
Vegas outgained Tucson in total offense, 243 yards to 199. The Knight Hawks had a 84-yard edge in the passing game, while the Sugar Skulls had a 30-yard advantage on the ground. Each team was penalized three times; Vegas for 22 yards and Tucson for 11 yards.
