SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Green Bay Blizzard established a 23-point third quarter lead and never looked back as they defeated the Sioux Falls Storm tonight, 51-30.
With the win, the Blizzard clinched the first seed in the Eastern Conference. They will host the fourth-seeded Quad City Steamwheelers in the first round of the IFL playoffs on Friday, July 26. They also completed their first-ever season sweep of the Storm, winning all three meetings this season. The Blizzard won the first matchup 48-35 at Green Bay, and won the second meeting 46-38 at Sioux Falls. The Storm still lead the overall series in the current IFL 21-5, including a 12-3 mark at home.
There was only one score in the first quarter; a 41-yard field goal from Green Bay's Andrew Mevis, giving the Blizzard a 3-0 lead by the end of the quarter.
Max Meylor's one-yard rush five minutes into the second quarter gave the Blizzard a 10-point lead. Jiya Wright's 30-yard touchdown pass to Draysean Hudson put the Storm on the scoreboard. However, the Blizzard came right back with a 34-yard touchdown toss from Meylor to D.J. Burgess, Jr. just over a minute later. Meylor's four-yard touchdown toss to Jaylin Cagle increased the Blizzard lead with seven seconds left in the half. Green Bay went into intermission with a 24-7 lead.
Meylor hit Cagle on a 24-yard touchdown strike to open the third quarter to extend the Blizzard's lead to 30-7. Wright scored on a three-yard run midway through quarter for Sioux Falls. Ravarius Rivers fumbled on the kickoff and it was recovered by the Storm's Jaylon Abdul-Karim at the Green Bay four-yard line. Bryson Denley capitalized on the turnover for the Storm with a three-yard run. Wright's pass to Denley completed the two-point conversion and the Blizzard's lead was cut to eight points. Green Bay answered with a five-yard touchdown pass from Meylor to Demetrius Moore with 39 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Blizzard led 37-22 heading into the fourth.
They added a score via Meylor's 19-yard touchdown toss to Burgess with under five minutes remaining. The storm scored once more on a 13-yard touchdown from Wright to Hudson two minutes later, and Wright added a two-point conversion rush. Meylor added what amounted to icing on the cake with a one-yard run with a little over a minute to go.
Meylor completed 23 of 28 passes for 265 yards with five passing touchdowns and two rushing scores. Burgess caught nine balls for 123 yards and two touchdowns and Cable had five grabs for 55 yards and two scores. Nijul Canada tallied eight tackles (all solo) and Rivers had an interception to go with five tackles.
For the Storm, Wright finished seven of 15 for 72 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed 20 times for 90 yards and a score. Hudson led Storm receivers with four catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Dylan Pettway led the defense with 7.5 tackles.
Green Bay outgained Sioux Falls in total offense, 292 yards to 173. That included a 202-yard advantage in the passing game, while the Storm had a 83-yard edge in the running game. The Blizzard were cited 12 times for 69 yards, while the Storm were penalized four times for 27 yards.
